Interim Fleet Manager

Day rate: Up to £500 per day (via umbrella company)
Location: West Midlands (hybrid)
Contract: Interim- 6-month contract

A large West Midlands-based public sector organisation is seeking an experienced Fleet Manager to lead and transform the strategic and operational management of its diverse vehicle fleet. This is an excellent interim opportunity for a senior fleet professional to make a significant impact within a complex, high‑profile environment.

The Role

Reporting to the Head of Fleet, you will provide strategic leadership across all fleet operations within the operational services environment. You will be responsible for ensuring compliance, driving sustainable fleet performance, and managing the full vehicle lifecycle, from procurement through to disposal.Key priorities include:

  • Leading and overseeing daily fleet operations, ensuring optimal utilisation and legal compliance across all vehicles.
  • Developing and implementing fleet strategies to minimise downtime and maximise productivity.
  • Managing statutory compliance including MOT, licencing, inspections, tax and insurance.
  • Coordinating vehicle maintenance, servicing and repairs with internal teams and external suppliers.
  • Implementing effective reporting frameworks, analysing fleet data and performance trends.
  • Managing budgets, controlling costs and ensuring financial efficiency.
  • Overseeing accident reporting, insurance claims and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Driving sustainability initiatives, including supporting the transition to low‑emission alternatives.
  • Supporting the procurement and replacement of fleet vehicles, ensuring value for money and alignment with organisational and environmental goals.
  • Leading and developing a team including supervisors, support officers and claims staff.


About You

You will bring strong experience managing a large and complex vehicle fleet, with deep knowledge of compliance, scheduling, maintenance and cost control. You will also demonstrate:

  • A CPC in Road Haulage or Passenger Transport Operations (essential).
  • Proven experience managing vehicle lifecycle costs and replacement strategies.
  • Strong understanding of vehicle depreciation, maintenance costs and environmental considerations.
  • Experience with fleet management software and data analysis tools.
  • Leadership capability with experience managing multi‑disciplinary teams.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to influence a range of stakeholders.
  • Experience managing external suppliers and contracts.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and high operational standards.
