Our Service

We operate a fleet of about 1200 vehicles across North Yorkshire. The fleet consists of a variety of vehicles from refuse collection vehicles, gritters, road sweepers, minibuses, tippers, cars and vans.

We work closely with NY Highways Ltd and other Brierley Group Companies and provide a maintenance service to those companies where required where there are a further 300 vehicles. We also operate about 200 vehicles on its Goods Operator Licence and 105 minibuses on Transport Act Permits. These vehicles must be operated under stringent undertakings that are made to the office of the Traffic Commissioners.

The safe operation and availability of vehicles is vital so that services are able to discharge their function without impediment, to ensure that road safety is maintained, and that the reputation of the Council is protected. We have PSV Permits and a standard LGV Operator’s Licence that require statutory compliance. Non- compliance with statutory undertakings can result in disciplinary action by the Traffic Commissioner whereby they may suspend, curtail or revoke our Operator’s Licence preventing the Council from operating.

This is where you come in.

The Role

We are seeking a motivated and organised technical assistant to join our Fleet Services team, supporting the Fleet Development and Fleet Performance Manager in delivering improvements across the Councils vehicle fleet. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to a modern, efficient and environmentally responsible fleet service that supports essential services across the Council.

In this role, you will help deliver fleet development projects and support the day to day management of fleet information, compliance and vehicle-related processes. You will assist with maintaining accurate fleet records, co-ordinating vehicle procurement and disposal activities, supporting compliance monitoring, and helping to ensure vehicles remain safe, efficient, and available to services when needed. The role also involves working with fleet data and systems to monitor vehicle usage, maintenance performance, and environmental impact, enabling the council to make informed decisions about future fleet improvements.

What you will bring…

We are looking for someone who brings strong organisational skills, attention to detail and the confidence to work with a wide range of colleagues and external suppliers.

You should be comfortable managing your own workload, proactive and adaptable, able to use own initiative to resolve routine issues and support a range of fleet development and supporting multiple projects at the same time. Good IT skills and the ability to work with data and reporting systems are important, as is the ability to communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical colleagues to support decision making.

A background in fleet, transport, technical, or operational environment would be beneficial working in a role that combines administration, technical support, and project assistance.

A positive approach, willingness to learn, and commitment to service improvement are essential.

What We Offer...

We can offer you a comprehensive benefits package including:

modern flexible working practices
a local government pension scheme
family friendly leave
salary sacrifice, employee cash backs and discounts schemes
learning, development and career advancement opportunities
We can also offer you multiple opportunities for career progression working across diverse services.
