An opportunity has arisen for the appointment of a post CCT Fellow in the Departments of Upper Gastrointestinal (Oesophagogastric) and Bariatric Surgery, at Salford Royal Hospital. This is a 12 month post which will provide an opportunity for the appointee to learn and develop subspecialty-level skill in the management of Oesophagogastric cancer, Bariatric and Complex Benign Upper GI Surgery.

The post would be suitable for doctors on the specialist register for general surgery or who are in the final 6 months of training.

Salford Royal Hospital, part of the Northern Care Alliance, is the sole surgical centre for Oesophagogastric cancer surgery for the whole of Greater Manchester (population of 3.2 million). The department also provides bariatric surgery for the Greater Manchester. Since September 2018 the unit has undertaken all Oesophagogastric cancer resections and all complex benign upper GI operations for the patients of Greater Manchester. It is estimated that the unit performs approximately 160 Oesophagogastric cancer resections and well over 200 bariatric operations each year. The unit has special interest in minimally invasive Upper GI surgery and this post is designed to provide opportunity to develop advanced surgical skills in minimally invasive oesophagectomy, gastrectomy, bariatric and complex benign Upper GI surgery, as well as gaining confidence in undertaking open Upper GI cancer surgery.

This post is a Fellowship for a Senior Upper GI/Post CCT Trainee with pre-existing documented advanced UGI and laparoscopic skills and a specific interest in OG cancer surgery. The fellowship is designed to lead to a consultant post and requires competence in:

• UGI surgery outpatients and patient selection criteria
• Multidisciplinary team working
• Preoperative patient preparation
• Technical skills in OG cancer surgery
• Postoperative care
• Management of complications
• JAG (or near) accreditation to perform independent endoscopy

The programme will be structured around a regular weekly timetable offering extensive elective and emergency Upper GI experience. The appointee will participate in MDT, audit and management meetings, and will be encouraged to attend suitable training courses and conferences. Additional involvement in surgical research/teaching and training is also encouraged.
It is proposed that the appointee will provide 10 PA’s per week (9 PA’s DCC and 1 SPA) which will include outpatient clinics, operating theatre lists, endoscopy lists and administration.
The fellow will work with the team to ensure good quality pre, peri and postoperative care of the Upper GI Surgery patients. He/she will be working jointly with the other trainee surgeons in order to provide cross cover and continuous service.
