About the Role

I am a 19-year-old autistic person with complex health needs, including Hypermobile Spectrum Disorder (HSD), and I am looking for two reliable, patient and empathetic Personal Assistants to support me in my day-to-day life.

I live with my parents in the west of Newcastle along with my dog, two cats, four (very loved) pet rats and two fish.

I previously studied a Fine Art BA at university but had to withdraw due to my health needs. I still have a strong interest in creative subjects (especially painting) and enjoy listening to music. I also enjoy browsing shops and researching niche medical topics. I would like support to get out into the community more, including visiting the beach, the Alan Shearer Centre and the Centre for Life. I used to love spending time in the nature reserve by my house and would like opportunities to do that again where possible.

As an autistic person, I mask heavily in most situations, especially new ones. This is physically and emotionally exhausting and can lead to burnout. It may take time for me to feel comfortable and unmask around a new PA, so patience, consistency and understanding are very important to me.

I sometimes experience verbal shutdowns. During these times I may be unable to speak and typically use basic Makaton to communicate. I need someone who can stay calm, give me space, and support alternative communication when this happens.

My health can fluctuate significantly from day to day, so flexibility and a willingness to adapt are essential.

I need support with:

Cleaning, tidying and organising
Cooking and meal preparation
Shopping and money management
Medication management
Support with physiotherapy exercises
General support with my medical needs
Developing routines and structure
Emotional regulation
Accessing the community
Attending medical appointments (and hospital/A&E if required)

I do drive and have my own car. However, due to medical episodes, there are times when I am unable to drive safely and may need support getting to appointments or hospital (including A&E if required). So, a PA who is a confident driver would be beneficial, but this is not essential.

I am also an ambulatory wheelchair user, however I am not able to propel myself independently for more than short distances, so someone with enough physical strength to assist/push me when needed is essential.

I am looking for someone who is respectful, non-judgmental, calm and genuinely interested in supporting me to build independence, confidence and quality of life. Experience is helpful but not essential — the right attitude matters most.

This post is subject to a satisfactory DBs check and references which will be taken up if you are offered the post.

At the time of starting their employment, the successful candidate must have permission to work in the U.K.
