We are seeking a Joiner with a high attention to detail and enthusiasm for the craft as well as a commitment to team development and conservation best practice.
Salary: £30-32k
Contract type: Permanent
Working Hours: Monday - Friday, 39 hours per week

You will be responsible for planning, organising, and carrying out maintenance repairs across Mount Stuart House and other Mount Stuart Trust sites on the Isle of Bute. Working with the Head of Property, Maintenance Supervisor and other team members you will carry out a range of joinery-based maintenance repairs including but not exclusively:
• Conservation repairs
• Repairing wooden fixtures and structures
• Window manufacture, installation and repairs
• Easing and adjusting of door and windows
• Roofing joinery
• Signage
• Fencing
• Glazing

You will also be involved with other tasks and event-based activities:
• Constructing art displays and installations
• Stripping out vacant properties
• Assist with manual handling activities
• Cleaning gutters, drainage and downpipes
• Roof insulation works
• Operate a range of plant and equipment
• Work on refurbishment projects with other team members and approved contractors as required
• Carrying out emergency, cyclical and reactive maintenance
• Providing information on property condition

Working within our small maintenance team, around half your time will be working at Mount Stuart House undertaking cyclical maintenance and joinery projects as well as being involved with conservation tasks. The other half of your time will be working on the upkeep of the residential and self-catering holiday let portfolio.

Required Skills and Qualifications

• Proven Experience: Demonstrable experience working with historic or listed buildings is essential.
• Specialist Materials Knowledge: Familiarity with materials appropriate for historic surfaces, including types of timber, wall coating systems, plaster, limewash etc
• Conservation Techniques: A strong understanding of how to prepare and repair sensitive historic structures—such as wood, plaster, and masonry—while protecting original architectural features.
• Certifications: working at height certification desirable, but training can be provided.


Key Responsibilities of the Role
• Undertake conservation and routine maintenance joinery works across Mount Stuart Trust properties, using a range of traditional and modern techniques.
• Carry out conservation and ongoing maintenance at Mount Stuart House, the Grade A listed mansion on the Isle of Bute, including traditional decorative finishes within the main house and historic buildings across the estate.
• Work collaboratively as part of the maintenance team to deliver the painting programme for residential properties, self-catering holiday accommodation, and other buildings within the Trust’s portfolio.
• Support the development of future apprentices or placement students by providing training and mentorship in traditional joinery skills.
• Adhere to and actively promote Mount Stuart Trust’s Health and Safety policies at all times.
• Participate in relevant training courses throughout employment, as required to support the role or to ensure compliance with health and safety legislation.

Essential
• Significant working experience as a Joiner within heritage buildings
• Knowledge and experience of conservation and heritage practices and techniques
• Good timekeeping
• Good work ethic
• Willingness to be ‘Hands on’
• Ability to work comfortably at height
• Ability to work on own and also as part of a team
• Health & Safety awareness relating to construction works
• Full clean driving licence
