1. Clinical Support Duties As a Health Care Assistant in the Operating Theatres, you will work under the direct supervision of registered nurses and theatre practitioners to support safe, high-quality patient care. Your responsibilities will include: Assisting with the implementation of individual care plans as directed by the Registered Nurse Supporting patients with personal care needs and promptly reporting any changes in condition Aiding in the safe mobilisation and transfer of patients within the perioperative environment Recognising signs of pain or discomfort and escalating concerns appropriately Supporting patients with dietary needs, including meal delivery and assistance with eating and drinking Demonstrating sensitivity to the diverse needs of patients, carers, and families Identifying and reporting safeguarding concerns for vulnerable patients Preparing theatres for surgery, ensuring strict adherence to infection control protocols Assisting in the setup of surgical equipment and supplies Acting as a circulating assistant during procedures, ensuring all required items are available and patient safety is maintained Cleaning and resetting the theatre between cases Supporting patients with elimination needs and accurately documenting outputs Assisting with pressure area care and skin integrity monitoring Collaborating with the multidisciplinary team to deliver compassionate, respectful care Supporting safe patient discharge or transfer from the theatre area 2. Housekeeping and Environmental Care Maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming theatre environment for patients, visitors, and staff Applying infection control techniques, including safe disposal of sharps and handling of spillages Cleaning and preparing equipment for use, ensuring correct labelling and storage Reporting faulty or damaged equipment and ensuring it is appropriately labelled Transporting specimens, documentation, and equipment as required Escorting patients to other departments when necessary Monitoring and maintaining stock levels and ensuring storage areas are clean and organised 3. Clerical and Reception Support Performing administrative tasks in the absence of the ward clerk or receptionist Handling enquiries courteously and professionally Maintaining patient confidentiality at all times Redirecting clinical queries to the appropriate registered staff Ensuring accurate documentation and record-keeping Booking patient appointments and arranging transport as directed 4. Education and Development Participating in ongoing training and competency development to maintain up-to-date knowledge Adhering to hospital policies and procedures, including those related to complaints, fire safety, and major incidents Engaging in regular appraisals and developing a Personal Development Plan (PDP) Attending relevant educational programmes to support personal and team growth in line with service needs
