We’re looking for someone with a love of history and an eye for detail, who’s friendly and open with people. This role is about looking after a historic house and its collections of precious objects, furniture and works of art. And it’s about presenting all of this to people visiting, and helping to make every person’s day memorable and enjoyable.
Pay: £12.75 per hour - we’re currently undertaking our pay review process and it is likely that this salary will be increased from 1st April 2026.
Contract: Fixed term until 31st October 2026
Hours and working pattern: The hours advertised for this role is reflective of 12 months, however the actual hours you’ll be required to work for this role are 390. The amount of hours you work each month may vary, however your salary will be paid in equal instalments over the term of your contract. On average, you'll work 15 hours per week, over three 5 hour days. This role will include regular weekend and Bank holiday working.
For this role, you’ll need to complete our online assessment instead of using a C.V. or online application form. This will help us understand more about your strengths and give you more information on the role.
What it's like to work here
Working as a Collections Assistant at Wallington offers the chance to care for an amazing collection, including internationally recognised ceramics, one of the most important 19th century libraries in the Trust, culturally significant artworks including pieces by Bell Scott, Reynolds, Gainsborough, Turner, and Burne-Jones, and an out of the ordinary ‘cabinet of curiosities’.
You'll be working within a team with 2 other Collections Assistants, a Collections & House Officer, and a Senior Collections & House Officer. The Collections & House team are an integral part of the wider property team, and together we welcome around 260,000 visitors to the estate annually. The wider estate is home to rare native species including red squirrels and white-clawed crayfish, as well as other wildlife and plants. You’ll collaborate with outdoor colleagues to understand the importance of the wider estate in connection to the house, and as part of your work here you will grow to understand and explore these fascinating links through generations of Wallington’s owners.
What you'll be doing
As Collections Assistant, you’ll be working with a supportive housekeeping team in an inspiring historic setting. You’ll be helping with the day-to-day cleaning and care of the precious collections of objects, works of art, textiles and furniture that are part of the House’s history. You’ll be alert to details and changes, and will keep a keen eye on everything from the environmental conditions in a room to any signs of wear and tear. You’ll also be keeping accurate records, and providing support to our Service Assistants and Collections & House volunteers when needed.
It's a role that’s all about people as well, so you’ll be talking to visitors about the work you’re doing and the collections you help to look after.
You can view the full role profile for this role in the document attached. You don't need to have all the knowledge, skills and experience listed in the role profile; this is just to provide a full picture of what’s possible in this role.
