Powder Coating Spray Operative – Job Specification
Role Overview
The Powder Coating Spray Operative is responsible for preparing, coating, and finishing metal components using electrostatic powder‑coating equipment. The role ensures high‑quality finishes, efficient workflow, and adherence to safety and environmental standards within a production or fabrication environment.
Key Responsibilities
Surface Preparation — Clean, degrease, mask, sandblast, or otherwise prepare metal components to ensure optimal coating adhesion.
Powder Application — Operate manual or automatic powder‑coating spray guns, booths, and curing ovens to apply coatings to required thickness and finish standards.
Quality Control — Inspect coated items for coverage, thickness, colour consistency, curing quality, and defects; rework items where necessary.
Equipment Operation & Maintenance — Set up, adjust, and maintain spray guns, booths, filters, and ovens; report faults promptly.
Material Handling — Load and unload components onto jigs, racks, and conveyor systems; ensure safe handling to avoid damage.
Process Documentation — Record batch details, coating specifications, and quality checks in line with company procedures.
Health & Safety Compliance — Follow COSHH, PPE, ventilation, and safe‑working practices; maintain a clean and organised work area.
Collaboration — Work closely with production, fabrication, and finishing teams to meet deadlines and maintain workflow efficiency.
Essential Skills & Experience
Experience in powder coating, spray painting, or a similar finishing environment.
Ability to operate electrostatic spray equipment and curing ovens.
Understanding of surface preparation techniques and coating specifications.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to high‑quality finishes.
Ability to read job sheets, technical drawings, or coating instructions.
Good physical fitness for manual handling and repetitive tasks.
Awareness of health & safety and COSHH requirements.
Desirable Skills
Experience with pre‑treatment systems (phosphate, chromate, wash plants).
Knowledge of RAL colours, coating thickness measurement, and gloss testing.
Forklift licence or overhead crane experience.
Experience in a lean manufacturing or ISO‑certified environment.
Personal Attributes
Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently or as part of a team.
