Neway International are seeking a Streetworks Inspector to join our client based with Somerset Council.
Location: The Crescent, Taunton, Somerset, TA1 4DY
Hours: 37 per week
Start Date: 16 March 2026
Duration: 9 months +
Rates: PAYE: £14.82 per hour Limited/Umbrella: £19.89 per hour
Work Pattern: Remote (5 days), with periodic office attendance for training, meetings and updates
About the Client
Somerset Council’s Infrastructure & Transport division oversees the safe and compliant delivery of works across the county’s highway network. The Streetworks team ensures statutory undertakers and contractors meet all legal, safety and reinstatement standards, protecting the public, the network and the integrity of Somerset’s roads. The service operates in a fast‑paced, high‑visibility environment where accuracy, professionalism and strong partnership working are essential.
The Role
As a Streetworks Inspector, you will inspect live works and completed reinstatements across Somerset to ensure compliance with NRSWA, permit conditions, the Specification for the Reinstatement of Openings in Highways (SROH), and the Safety at Street Works & Road Works Code of Practice. You will work largely independently, travelling across the county, engaging with statutory undertakers, and recording inspection outcomes using electronic systems.
Key Responsibilities
Inspect live street works and completed reinstatements to ensure compliance with legislation, permit conditions and technical standards.
Meet with statutory undertakers to discuss performance, compliance and upcoming works.
Identify defective works, issue instructions for remedial action and follow up to ensure completion.
Record inspections using handheld devices and systems such as Confirm and Street Manager, including accurate mapping and photographic evidence.
Check diversion routes and temporary traffic management for compliance with signage and safety requirements.
Carry out post‑closure inspections to identify damage caused by diverted traffic and direct undertakers to remedy issues.
Provide site‑based advice, local knowledge and practical insight to coordinators and statutory undertakers.
Engage professionally with the public, addressing complaints, enquiries and on‑site issues.
Provide evidence to support enforcement processes, including overrunning works (s.74) and non‑compliance inspections.
Candidate Requirements
Essential
Street Works Supervisor qualification.
Confident working on live sites and engaging with statutory undertakers and the public.
Ability to work independently across a wide geographic area.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to record accurate, detailed inspection data using electronic devices.
Understanding of streetworks compliance, safety and reinstatement standards.
Desirable
Experience using Confirm, Street Manager or similar systems.
Previous experience in highways, streetworks or local authority environments.
