Silcoates is a leading independent school set in beautiful, historic grounds in Wakefield. We pride ourselves on providing an inspiring learning environment for our pupils, supported by exceptional facilities and a dedicated staff team. Our grounds play a key role in school life, and we are now seeking a motivated and enthusiastic individual to train as a Grounds Apprentice.
Primary Responsibility
As part of a small dedicated Grounds team, you will help support and promote the School by ensuring that the school grounds are maintained to the highest standard, ensuring they are safe, attractive and fit for purpose for pupils, staff and visitors. The grounds include gardens, Forest School areas, pitches (natural and artificial), woodlands and other facilities, boundaries, pathways and areas of the campus.
The role will be part of the Grounds team, reporting to the Head of Grounds.
Key Duties
Under the direction of the Head of Grounds;
• Undertake general gardening duties
• Undertake maintenance duties for grounds facilities and common areas
• Operate equipment as required for grounds’ maintenance work in line with training provided and safe systems of work
• Ensure that all equipment is maintained in good condition, is properly looked after and cleaned regularly
• Ensure the site is safe and well presented, including snow shovelling, gritting and leaf blowing.
• Assist with preparation for school events and sports fixtures
• Abide by Health and Safety, Safeguarding and Hygiene procedures and standards of performance
• Support the work of the Maintenance team from time to time as required
Person Specification
Essential
• Good standard of fitness and capable of heavy work
• Able to work outdoors in all weathers, including rain and snow
• Passionate about grounds and gardens and their importance in life
• Strong commitment to the environment including a willingness to adapt to secure the most environmentally sustainable manner of achieving your objectives
• Self-motivated, with the ability to work unsupervised
• Aware of the importance of Child Protection and Safeguarding of young people
• Prepared to undergo appropriate training as requested by the School
• Energy, drive, enthusiasm and a positive manner
Desirable
• Experience in gardening or grounds maintenance.
• A driving licence is not essential, but would be desirable. You should be able to travel reliably on a daily basis to the school site and to Barnsley College’s Wigfield Farm campus regularly for study.
GCSE maths and English at Grade 4 or above – Desirable
working week: 37.5 Hours per week - Monday- Friday 7.30am-3.30pm
