Summary
Location: Midlands (Office Based)
Company: James Engineering Constructions Ltd
Sector: Structural Steel / Specialist Fabrication / NEC Projects
Salary: £38,000 – £45,000 (dependent on experience)
RICS Support: Yes
About Us
James Engineering Constructions Ltd is a specialist structural steel and engineering contractor delivering complex fabrication and installation packages across the UK.
We operate within NEC contractual frameworks and work closely with Tier 1 contractors and end clients on technically demanding projects.
We are looking for an Assistant Quantity Surveyor who wants real commercial responsibility — not just administration.
The Role
This is a hands-on commercial role within a fabrication-led engineering business. You will support the Contracts Director and Commercial Lead in managing project financial performance, protecting entitlement, and strengthening margin control across live projects.
This role is suited to someone with 2–4 years’ experience who is ready to take ownership of packages and develop into a fully independent QS.
Key Responsibilities
• Prepare and submit monthly applications for payment (NEC Option A)
• Maintain and update Activity Schedule trackers
• Manage Compensation Event (CE) register and support submissions
• Issue and track Early Warnings where required
• Assist in protecting entitlement relating to delay, disruption and design development
• Subcontract package management including variations and final accounts
• Support procurement cost control and risk monitoring
• Maintain accurate cost-to-complete forecasts
• Monitor LD exposure and programme-related commercial risks
• Support cashflow forecasting and payment tracking
This role involves real commercial decision-making, not just measurement support.
What We’re Looking For
Essential
• 2–4 years’ experience in a Quantity Surveying role
• Experience preparing applications for payment
• Understanding of NEC3/NEC4 (preferably Option A)
• Ability to interpret drawings and understand fabrication-based projects
• Strong commercial awareness and attention to detail
• Confident communicator (internal and external stakeholders)
Desirable
• Structural steel or engineering background
• Experience with subcontractor-side commercial management
• RICS pathway underway or planned
• Understanding of programme logic and delay analysis basics
What You’ll Get
• Exposure to full project commercial lifecycle
• Direct mentoring from senior leadership
• RICS support and structured development
• Genuine ownership of project packages
• A commercially focused SME environment where performance is visible and valued
The Type of Person Who Will Succeed Here
• Structured and organised
• Commercially curious
• Comfortable working in a fast-paced fabrication environment
• Proactive in identifying risk
• Interested in developing into a fully autonomous QS
If you are currently “assisting” but not yet owning packages, and you’re ready to step up into real responsibility — this role is designed for that progression.
Benefits
Depending on experience the starting Salary based on experience + company vehicle available to the right candidate on completion of probation.
Holidays

• 3 Further days after 5 years service
