About the Client
Southwark Council’s Environment, Sustainability and Leisure directorate is committed to delivering clean, safe and well‑maintained outdoor spaces for residents across the borough. The Cleaning, Grounds Maintenance & Tree Services team plays a vital role in supporting community wellbeing and ensuring high standards across estates and public areas.

The Role
As a Gardener within the council’s Grounds Maintenance service, you will help maintain welcoming, safe and attractive outdoor environments across multiple estates. This includes communal green spaces, pathways, play areas and estate entrances. Your work directly supports resident satisfaction and contributes to the overall appearance and safety of the borough.

Key Responsibilities
Maintain lawns, hedges, flower beds and communal gardens across council estates

Carry out regular litter picking and waste removal

Ensure pathways, entrances and communal areas remain clean and hazard‑free

Perform seasonal tasks including leaf clearance, snow removal and gritting

Report fly‑tipping, vandalism or safety concerns to the relevant council team

Operate and maintain groundskeeping equipment (mowers, strimmers, leaf blowers etc.)

Engage respectfully with residents and uphold council service standards

Candidate Requirements
Previous experience in grounds maintenance or landscaping

Understanding of health & safety procedures in public spaces

Ability to use and maintain outdoor tools and machinery

Strong communication skills and a community‑focused approach

Physically fit and able to work outdoors in all weather conditions

Basic horticultural knowledge
