About Us
Established since 1929, ALVANCE British Aluminium, part of the GFG Alliance, owns and operates the last remaining aluminium production plant (smelter) in the UK and a connected hydropower electricity generation station located on the slopes of Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain. A combination or renewable energy sources makes this site one of the greenest metal production plants in the country
The Course
Duration - 4 years 6 Months [6 months to apply qualification to work]
First year is spent in college - UHI Inverness.
Start date July 2026 (college starts in September)
You will gain: National Certificate (with option to progress to HNC and HND), SVQ Level 3 at SCQF level 6

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Electrical Plant & Equipment
- Support planned maintenance, inspections, and shutdown activities.
- Assist in the maintenance and fault diagnosis of electrical equipment and associated systems.
- Learn to interpret electrical drawings, schematics, and single line diagrams.
- Develop understanding of site process equipment and auxiliary systems.
2. Electrical Distribution (LV & HV)
- Support maintenance of LV and HV switchgear, transformers, motors, and protection systems.
- Assist with safe isolation, switching procedures, and permit-to-work systems in accordance with site safety rules.
- Participate in inspection and testing of distribution boards, cabling systems, and associated infrastructure.
3. Control & Power Systems
- Assist with maintenance of control panels, power supplies, UPS systems, and associated equipment.
- Learn systematic fault-finding and problem-solving techniques on operationally critical systems.
- Support testing and commissioning activities where appropriate.
4. Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance
- Comply fully with Health & Safety at Work Act requirements and site-specific safety rules.
- Work under supervision in line with Safe Systems of Work and Permit to Work procedures.
- Complete mandatory training (e.g., electrical safety, manual handling, working at height).
- Promote and contribute to a positive safety culture.
5. Apprenticeship & Professional Development
- Attend college as required and successfully complete all academic modules.
- Build and maintain an SVQ portfolio of workplace evidence.
- Participate in regular reviews with workplace mentor and training provider.
