About the Hynish Trust
The Hynish Trust, formerly the Hebridean Trust, is a community-led charity based on the Isle of Tiree. Since its handover to the Tiree community in January 2025, the Trust has embraced a renewed vision focused on heritage, sustainability, and community development. Its work centres around the historic Hynish Shore Station, a site of national significance linked to the Skerryvore Lighthouse. The Trustees and volunteers have worked tirelessly to get the Hynish trust to this point. The organisation now needs a dedicated team to take it forward.
Project Overview: Lighting up the Hynish Shore Station
This two-year initiative celebrates the engineering and cultural legacy of Skerryvore Lighthouse. The project aims to secure the future of the site with a focus on heritage conservation with environmental sustainability and community engagement.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Planning
Prepare and deliver 3-year Sustainability Plan
Deliver formal project documents including:
Statement of Significance in conjunction with the Heritage Preservation Officer (HPO)
Annual Budgets
Lead an organisational review aligned with the Scottish Third Sector Governance Code (2022)
Ensure all systems, policies, and procedures are safe, legal, and fit for purpose
Contribute to the development of a long-term strategy in collaboration with the HPO and Trustees
Support Trustee development, including training and capacity building
Environmental Stewardship
Design and implement an Environmental Plan linking heritage and sustainability for the site
Collaborate with the HPO on audience engagement and conservation planning
Lead on environmental aspects of all projects
Income Generation and FundraisingDevelop and implement income generation initiatives
Ensure all buildings on the site are generating required levels of sustainable income
Identify suitable funding opportunities for future projects and apply for relevant grants
Manage grant drawdowns and report to funders
Monitoring, Evaluation and Impact
Lead monitoring and evaluation of all projects and report to Trustees and Funders
Produce an Annual Impact Report
Note: Some evening and weekend work may be required depending on project activities.
Person Specification
Essential Experience and Skills
Ability to work independently and take responsibility for tasks without close supervision
Strong communication and presentation skills
Ability to manage multiple work streams effectively
Team-oriented with a collaborative mindset
Self-motivated, flexible, and positive attitude
Proven experience in project development and income generation
Track record of working with grant funders and securing funding
Experience working with charities and voluntary trustees
Keen interest in heritage and environmental sustainability
Full driving license and access to a vehicle
Desirable
Experience of working in the third sector
Interest in history and heritage
Experience of rural living
Working Arrangements and on‑Island Presence
We’re open to remote working and understand that flexibility is important. We do ask that team members spend part of their working time on Tiree, and we’re happy to discuss a hybrid arrangement that works for both you and the Trust.
