Summary
The role of the Speech and Language Therapy Assistant is to support the assessment and delivery of speech and language therapy to adult inpatients with a range of acquired communication and/or swallowing disorders. This includes providing direct clinical input to patients and also completing clerical and administrative duties directly related to patient activity.
The post holderwill work autonomously, under the supervision of a registered Speech and Language Therapist, across all clinical teams at Hull Royal Infirmary.
You will support the Speech & Language Therapy Department to deliver an efficient and effective service in line with guidance from the Acute Clinical Lead and/or Specialist Speech & Language Therapists, The Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists, the Health and Care Professions Council and Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
Responsibilities for Patient/Client Care
• Carry out specified observations, screening assessments and collect information to contribute to an assessment.
· Prioritise patient contact independently, with assistance from senior colleagues if required and overall scheduling guidance from the Lead Therapist.
· Deliver therapy, as directed by a registered Therapist, to a broadly based caseload of patients with acquired communication and/or swallowing disorders.
· Develop individual and group treatment plans to meet the aims set by the Therapist .
· Work with administration colleagues to complete duties essential to patient safety and flow (e.g. handing over clinical recommendations and transferring cases to other Therapy teams elsewhere in the region).
· Take the lead in completing essential clinical administration tasks (e.g. managing Lorenzo referrals) when admin lead is on leave.
· Implement AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) systems following the aims set by the Therapist.
· On specified occasions, assist patients who have had a laryngectomy with stoma and valve care.
· Monitor, assess and analyse progress of individual patients and regularly report back.
