We are seeking a dedicated individual who can adapt positively to change, enjoy collaborative working and are motivated to support the development of others.
In the role of Executive Officer, you will fulfil the duties of Clerk of Court. You will be responsible for effectively managing court business to ensure the smooth running of proceedings and the timely disposal of cases. This includes overseeing court proceedings, managing and preparing casework efficiently, and supporting the judiciary in the accurate and appropriate application of legislation and procedures.
While experience of leading or managing people, formally or informally, is desirable it is not essential. Support would be provided through coaching, training and direction to develop your management skills and abilities.
You will undergo a comprehensive training program beginning on 5 May 2026 that lasts several months. Please note that the start date for this training program is non-negotiable and you must be available to start on this date following the completion of successful pre-employment checks.
Due to operational requirements, training will take place across various locations within the central belt, and travel will therefore be expected during this initial period and will be covered under our travel and subsistence policy where applicable. Once the program is complete, you will be assigned a substantive role within Dunoon Sheriff & JP Court. with the requirement to cover Lochgilphead Sheriff & JP Court on a monthly basis to ensure the effective disposal of business and smooth running of Court.
Due to the distance between Dunoon and Lochgilphead and the travel that is required, a full driving license is preferred but not essential.
The Key Responsibilities Include:
Civil & Criminal Court:
Fulfilling the role of Clerk of Court in Civil & Criminal Courts, overseeing and managing courtroom proceedings in Dunoon and Lochgilphead.
Ensuring the efficient and effective preparation and disposal of casework and associated paperwork including diary entries and intimation orders of court.
Checking, processing & issuing of Civil and Criminal appeals, including monitoring time limits.
Assisting and supporting the judiciary in the appropriate application of legislation and procedures.
Coaches/develops administrative staff in court preparation, recording disposals, intimation to appropriate agencies in bulk courts.
General:
You will be required to manage the day to day running of the Sheriff Clerks Office.
You will have your own team to manage. You will take on all aspects of line management, including attendance management, providing direction and support every day to your team, whilst playing an instrumental part in the development of your team.
Provision of accurate advice to all court users including Sheriffs, Solicitors and members of the public often on technical and procedural matters.
To liaise with the Section Head in respect of resourcing, workloads and training for your team.
To deal with all Finance at Dunoon, including, but not restricted to, daily banking, reconciliation of accounts, month end and year end checks and production checks.
To be responsible for building H&S and to report all issues in a timely manner.
To secure the attendance of Sheriff / Summary Sheriff cover for Dunoon.
To facilitate the Standing Advisory Committee meetings at Dunoon and represent the Sheriff Clerk and SCTS at meetings with stakeholders.
Collating and submitting monthly statistics and targets.
You may be required to undertake other such duties as may reasonably be requested within the remit of the role.
