My client is seeking an experienced Ecologist to lead the development and day‑to‑day operation of their new office. Your new role
As the Ecology Lead responsible for the office, you will:Leadership & Strategy
- Support the Head of Ecology with the strategic functioning of the department.
- Participate in Senior Ecology and Middle Management meetings, contributing to organisational direction.
- Lead and grow a small team of consultants, managing workflow, deadlines, timesheets, and professional development.
- Embed company culture and oversee daily operations in the office.
Technical & Project Delivery
- Provide high‑level technical expertise across the ecology division.
- Lead and deliver complex reports, including EIAs, EcIAs and Biodiversity Net Gain assessments.
- Manage ecological input on multidisciplinary projects alongside in‑house specialists in landscape, arboriculture, drainage and heritage.
- Maintain strong working knowledge of UK and European wildlife legislation and planning policy.
Client & Commercial Responsibilities
- Independently quote work, support tendering, and manage client relationships.
- Liaise with clients, statutory bodies and stakeholders to ensure compliant, high‑quality delivery.
- Hold your own portfolio of projects and oversee invoicing for work undertaken.
Internal ExpectationsYou will be responsible for:
- Monitoring departmental targets and ensuring your team contributes effectively.
- Reviewing and ensuring consistent technical quality across reports.
- Conducting annual appraisals, bi‑annual meetings, maintaining training logs and supporting progression.
- Ensuring appropriate use of internal systems, reviewing timesheets, managing TOIL and monitoring workloads.
This role offers a high degree of influence within the ecology division, combining hands‑on technical work with strategic leadership.
What you'll need to succeed
To thrive in this role, you will bring:
- Proven experience producing complex technical ecological reports, including BNG assessments, mitigation licensing, HMMPs and condition discharge documents.
- Strong project management abilities, including direct client liaison.
- Demonstrated experience managing or mentoring staff.
- Associate or Full CIEEM membership (or working towards).
- Strong technical understanding of UK ecology, wildlife legislation and planning policy.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Previous staff management experience.
- Proficiency in GIS or other mapping software.
- A full UK manual driving licence and willingness to travel for fieldwork (access to a fleet of new company vehicles is provided).
