KPMG’s UK Commodity and Carbon Trading Solutions (CCTS) team is growing its capability to deliver wide-ranging advisory services to companies participating in global wholesale and retail traded energy, commodity and carbon markets, assisting them to manage the evolving market landscape. Our brand and reputation mean that we work on high profile strategic projects, using our experience and frameworks to help clients to build value.

Using a wide variety of technical and commodity-specific skills, the CCTS team helps clients increase commercial value whilst reducing reputational, operational, financial and other risks. Within the energy and commodity sector, we work with the world’s largest physical market participants, as well as many regional, specialist companies, some of whom are financially regulated, and all of whom are active in exchange traded physical and financial derivative markets. Increasingly we are also working with corporate clients who need to access wholesale markets to execute their energy procurement and decarbonisation strategies.

Our client base is facing into the Energy Transition, and this is reflected in increased demand for support in new business and market entry as well as evaluating and improving operational processes, market-, credit-, environmental- and compliance- risk management frameworks across all asset classes. We deliver those capabilities in a wide range of project scenarios from Merger and Acquisition Due Diligence, operational transformation, risk and regulatory advisory, internal audit (as subject matter experts) and forensic investigation, focusing always on wholesale traded physical and financial commodity markets.

To support the growth of the CCTS team, an additional Director is required to create commercial demand, drive delivery and to provide subject matter expertise to a range of client projects.

Description of the role:

Within this role, you can expect to:

  • Lead proposals and engagements across a diverse range of clients from scoping and planning, through the analysis and execution of fieldwork, through to reporting.
  • Leverage your technical knowledge, experience and contacts to spot future demand for our products and capabilities.
  • Display genuine interest and ability to utilise and develop your network of contacts, innovate and contribute to the development of our business.
  • Manage the risk and commercial aspects involved in the delivery of proposals and projects including budgets, planning and project governance.
  • Manage and mentor team members from diverse backgrounds during projects and as part of the KPMG appraisal process.
  • Develop and improve KPMG assets, methodologies and tools to deliver consistent, world-class advisory services.
  • Own key client relationships on programmes and support KPMG’s commercial position.
  • Play a lead role in the development of KPMG’s global CCTS capability and build the community.
  • Support supra-national institutions and industry working groups in understanding emerging issues and trends in global commodities markets.

Role dimensions:

Leadership & Management:

Ability to lead cross functional (and often global) engagement teams both internally within KPMG and external client teams across all strata of the organisation. Act as formal performance manager for junior members of the team and actively participate in our bi-annual appraisal process.

Stakeholder Interaction & challenges:

Build rapport and maintain relationships to support delivery of each engagement. Act as a conduit between KPMG and client teams and translate ‘jargon’ into business terminology. Maintain relationships with various vendors and Alliance Partners.

Impact, Risk, Accountability & Governance:

Identify and manage risks, engagement assurance and commercial risk management and ensure the Firm's frameworks are implemented appropriately and effectively.

The Person:

Experience

Essential

  • Significant experience in energy and commodities trading covering front-to-back process understanding, and at least one of operational risk, market risk, credit risk, and financial regulatory compliance.
  • Demonstrable sales skills and experience, including creating new ideas to expand a team’s market offering and leading sales pitches to generate new work.
  • A proven record of delivering large scale projects.
  • Experience managing teams of consultants and across a range of client engagements.
  • Proactive individual who can work with different stakeholders and adapt well to changing deadlines.

Desirable

  • Consulting background with experience in an energy and commodity trading team as part of a professional services firm (Big 4 ideal).
  • An Accounting qualification is useful but not essential, as are other relevant professional qualifications (e.g. GARP Financial Risk Manager (FRM) certification)
  • Subject Matter Expertise on one or more topics within the commodity and energy wholesale markets to support development of our internal propositions and thought leadership.
  • Understanding of technology solutions in the market and best practice deployment into business-as-usual operations.
