About the Placement:
Are you enthusiastic about horticulture? Do you want to develop experience and knowledge while working in a team at RHS Garden Wisley? Are you interested in specialising and completing a Level 3 Award to further your career?
Our Professional Work Placement programme is a one-year paid work experience placement for horticulturists who wish to specialise. Applicants should have already completed (or be studying for) a Level 2 Horticultural theory qualification or apprenticeship standard and have 3 months (minimum) full time practical experience in the industry at the time of application.
The placement at Wisley provides the opportunity to spend a full year immersed within the Alpine and Rock Garden Team, studying this specialist group of plants and garden practices whilst completing a Level 3 Award.
You will gain knowledge, skills, training and experience in your garden area, in a work-based context, to prepare you for professional life in the industry.
Speciality focus: To develop and maintain speciality Alpine and Rock Garden plants and associated plant collections located within our historic Rock Garden and Alpine Display Houses.
Who will you be working with: The Alpine and Rock Garden Team
Speciality areas:
The naturalistic Rock Garden is one of Wisley’s oldest, and most magnificent, features. Constructed between 1910 and 1912, it showcases a wide range of alpines and plants that flourish in a rock garden setting, alongside small weeping trees and dwarf conifers for year-round interest. Many of the Rock Garden’s original features still exist. The Rock Garden is home to special collections including Lewisia hybrids, Hepatica, Crocus, Cyclamen, Saxifraga and Cypripedium.
The Fern Glade and Alpine Meadow add to the horticultural diversity of the area. The fern glade contains ferns, bulbs, woodland-edge planting under a deep canopy. The Alpine Meadow, managed by traditional scything, begins with Cyclamineus Narcissus in February and culminates in a display of orchids and meadow species in summer.
The dedicated Alpine Display Houses sit at the summit of the rock garden. The Display House has an ever-changing pot display for ‘wow’ factor, whereas the Cushion house mimics an alpine habitat as closely by providing suitable aspect, drainage, ventilation and shading in a protected environment.
The team also look after extensive Alpine Collections in a range of protected environments, implementing their expertise to maintain these collections for conservation and display purposes.
About the RHS Level 3 Award:
During the placement you will complete horticultural research culminating in a project write up and submission for the RHS Level 3 Award in Horticultural Investigation which will be funded by the RHS.
Candidates completing the Level 3 qualification will be allocated a Project Supervisor who will support and advise you on the project write up. In order to achieve the qualification, you will be required to attend several online sessions (either live or recordings) over a period of 9 months, submit a project write up and complete a professional discussion.
