Crynodeb
Situated within the heart of the Cambridge-Peterborough Growth Area, Huntingdonshire is a beautiful district that boasts thriving market towns and many attractive villages, each with its own identity. We are an innovative and forward-thinking local authority whose residents are at the heart of our decision-making.
At HDC we want to employ staff who embody our icare values (Inspiring, Collaborative, Accountable, Respectful, Enterprising), all of which support our ultimate purpose of putting our customers first.
Job details
As a Grounds Maintenance Operative, you’ll play a vital role in keeping our parks, play areas and public open spaces safe, clean and welcoming for residents and visitors across Huntingdonshire. Your work will be hands‑on and varied, with much of your time spent carrying out grass cutting, hedge maintenance and general soft landscaping tasks that ensure our outdoor spaces look their best throughout the year.
You’ll be operating equipment such as ride‑on mowers, strimmers, hedge trimmers and blowers, while also supporting a range of seasonal and reactive tasks including planting, pruning, sports pitch preparation, litter removal and responding to incidents or hazards that arise.
You’ll work both independently and as part of a supportive team, adapting to shifting priorities influenced by weather, seasonal workloads and community needs. Whether you’re maintaining equipment, interacting with the public or contributing to emergency works, you’ll be a valued and visible representative of the Council who helps maintain high standards of safety, presentation and service.
About you
You will be someone who thrives outdoors in all weather conditions and enjoys practical, physical work. Reliability, consistency and a positive attitude are essential, as is the ability to make sensible decisions on site to keep yourself and others safe.
You will bring confidence in operating grounds maintenance equipment or be willing to learn. You will communicate professionally with the public, offering reassurance and clear information when needed. You will be comfortable working both independently and collaboratively, showing flexibility as work programmes change and demonstrating pride in the spaces you help maintain.
Above all, you will share our commitment to safe working practices, excellent service and representing the Council with professionalism and respect.
