Job Purpose
To lead and coordinate Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) provision within the nursery, ensuring all children receive inclusive, high-quality support that enables them to achieve their full potential. The SENCO will work closely with staff, families, and external professionals to promote positive outcomes for every child.
Key Responsibilities
SEND Leadership & Coordination
Lead the identification, assessment, and support of children with additional needs
Maintain and review SEND records, support plans, and interventions
Monitor progress and evaluate the effectiveness of strategies and provision
Ensure the nursery meets statutory SEND requirements and follows the SEND Code of Practice
Support for Children
Develop and implement individual support plans and targeted interventions
Promote inclusive teaching strategies and differentiated learning opportunities
Work directly with children where appropriate to model strategies and support development
Supporting Staff
Provide guidance, coaching, and training for practitioners on SEND strategies
Support staff in observations, assessments, and next-step planning
Promote a whole-team approach to inclusion and early identification
Working with Families & Professionals
Build positive partnerships with parents and carers
Lead meetings and reviews relating to children with SEND
Liaise with external agencies such as speech and language therapists, educational psychologists, health visitors, and local authority teams
Safeguarding & Inclusion
Promote equality of opportunity and inclusive practice across the nursery
Ensure safeguarding procedures are followed at all times
Support children’s emotional wellbeing and positive behaviour
