A Senior Clinical Fellow post in Anaesthesia is available from February 2026 at the Oxford University Hospitals.

This is a 0.85 WTE post, offering the benefit of improved work/life balance, with a fixed day off midweek, while still offering development opportunities for candidates looking to pursue the portfolio pathway

We welcome applicants for the following post based across the hospitals of Oxford University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. This two-year long post will allow the trainee exposure to various sub-specialties in Anaesthesia including but not limited to Vascular, Regional, Transplant, Major Cancer, Emergency, Trauma Anaesthesia, and Intensive Care Medicine.

This is a great opportunity to work with a friendly, supportive group of anaesthetists, which is part of the wider Nuffield Department of Anaesthetics, in the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The post holder will work within the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust group of hospitals:
• The John Radcliffe Hospital – Trauma, Neuro, Obstetrics, Vascular, Airway, Plastics, Paediatrics, Gynaecology, Obstetrics and Intensive Care
• The Churchill Hospital – Transplant, Oncology, Airway, and Intensive Care
• The Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre
• Horton General Hospital (Banbury) – Day Surgery including Paediatrics.

The specific aims and objectives will be set by the Fellow in conjunction with their supervisors. The Fellowship will allow development of advanced skills in various anaesthesia disciplines including both planning and delivering anaesthesia to the most complex cases occurring in this specialist centre. There will be opportunities to work with distant, local and direct supervision.

On starting the post Fellows work under the direct supervision of senior staff until they have successfully completed appropriate induction to their new site of work. The Fellow will average three half day sessions per week of training activities supervised by a Senior Trainer. Every three months during the post (or more frequently if required) training will be reviewed by the Supervisor.

See attached Job Description for more details.

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trustis one of the largest NHS teaching trusts in the country. It provides a wide range of general and specialist clinical services and is a base for medical education, training and research. The Trust comprises four hospitals - the John Radcliffe Hospital, Churchill Hospital and Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Headington and the Horton General Hospital in Banbury.

Our values, standards and behaviours define the quality of clinical care we offer and the professional relationships we make with our patients, colleagues and the wider community.

We call this Delivering Compassionate Excellence and its focus is on our values of compassion, respect, learning, delivery, improvement and excellence.

These values put patients at the heart of what we do and underpin the quality healthcare we would like for ourselves or a member of our family. Watch how we set out to deliver compassionate excellence via theOUH YouTube channel.

Fellows are expected to keep accurate contemporaneous records of clinical activities or events, including pre-operative assessment, pre- and postoperative care, pain relief, critical incidents, etc., using the Trust approved documentation.

Fellows are expected to keep a record of their training including a log book of cases and a record of other activity.

The Departmental Administrator produces a weekly rota allocating each member of the trainee grades to particular duties. It is expected that the successful candidate will perform duties appropriate to the grade and to his/her level of experience. There will be times where the schedule has to be changed at short notice after the rota has been published and to move the Fellows to cover a different list, occasionally not directly related to the module they are currently undertaking.

Clinical:

The successful candidate may need to work across all OUH hospital sites, including the Horton hospital in Banbury.

The work schedule is resident, full shift 1:8 on call rota, mainly covering theatres but this may occasionally change to involve cover in Obstetrics and all Critical Care, especially in period so f high need, e.g. pandemic. Daytime work will typically include 3-monthly modules in specialties discussed between the Fellow, the programme director, and the College Tutors to ensure training of current trainees is not compromised.

Facilities for study and training:

Time is set aside for personal development, CPD and Audit. There are facilities both physical and electronic to support the post-holder in this. Additional time may be made available for research if desired.

Teaching, audit and research:

Fellows will be allocated time for completion of projects supporting their goals. There are numerous opportunities within the department for completion of projects including national audits, teaching medical students, and working in OxSTaR, the locally run simulation centre.
