We're on a journey to build a workforce reflective of our Borough.

We are committed to fostering diverse teams where everybody can bring their authentic selves to work and feel that they belong. If you want to work for a Council where everybody is encouraged to meet their full potential and make a difference in our neighbourhoods, we would love to hear from you!

Your role:

The Development Management Service plays a key role for sustainable growth across Wigan by facilitating the delivery of the aspirations and objectives set out in the Council’s Local Plan and Greater Manchester’s Places for Everyone Plan.

This exciting role is part of the Planning and Regeneration Service and is at the heart of this agenda. You will be part of the Development Management Team, working to the Team Leader.

Your role will primarily be focused on proactively monitoring, negotiating and discharging the conditions attached to a range of varying types of planning permissions, but most notably Major applications, including large-scale strategic developments.

About you:

This role is a great opportunity for someone early in their planning career, or someone looking to start a career in planning, to have the ability from day one to work with experienced development management professionals on a number of the borough’s most high-profile, major developments. You will require a commitment to continuous quality improvement, the achievement of performance targets, a customer driven attitude, flexibility in approach to work, a positive attitude and an awareness of the aims and objectives of the Council.

In undertaking the role you’ll have the ability to develop an in-depth understanding of the planning process, including the opportunity to work on your own caseload of applications. The service prides itself on supporting individuals to learn and grow within the team, along with supporting their career development and progression opportunities.

About us:

Wigan Council has been voted ‘Overall Council of the Year’ at the APSE (Association for Public Service Excellence) Awards. We are signed up to the Greater Manchester Continuous Service Commitment ensuring that your service will be continuous or 'unbroken' between the supporting organisations.

The Progress with Unity plan is a place movement for change for the next decade, bringing a new era for Wigan Borough. It draws on the strengths of our individual organisations, recognising that together we can achieve much more for our communities by delivering on our 2 place missions; create fair opportunities for all children, families, residents and businesses and make our towns and neighbourhoods flourish for those who live and work in them.

You will be surrounded by a team of dedicated and capable professionals and supported by an inspiring leadership team.

Through our ‘Be Wigan’ behaviours: Be Courageous, Be Accountable, Be Positive and Be Kind, we actively encourage innovation, strive to achieve outstanding services and celebrate our successes through the delivery of the Council’s Progress with Unity: A new era for Wigan Borough, a movement delivering change across the Borough over the next decade. In doing so, we truly value and recognise our staff as our greatest asset.

Here at Wigan, we are proud to support flexible working patterns, when the service can accommodate this. We also take a blended approach to where we work, depending on the work we do. This may include working from home, the office, or the community. We like to thank our employees for their hard work and commitment by giving them the opportunity to access a range of exclusive rewards and benefits click here to find out more about working for #TeamWigan.
