The SACT Specialist Nursing Team cares for patients with cancer who are receiving a wide range of Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapies, (SACT - which includes chemotherapy and newer novel agents, e.g. immunotherapies and gene therapy). We are looking for a Specialist Nurse to join our small nurse led SACT specialist team to provide expert care and advice to oncology and haematology patients. The team is based at the Churchill Hospital, with clinics at the Brodey Centre; Horton Hospital and you will be expected to work across both sites. As a Specialist Nurse you will be the identified as the key worker for agreed regimens and patient/client caseloads as well as provide advice, education and support to patients, their carers and other health care professionals. The SACT Specialist Nurses are an integral part of our multi-disciplinary team ensuring patients attending the Brodey Centre and Day Treatment Unit at the Churchill receive care of the highest possible standard.

We are looking for an experienced registered nurse who is an excellent team player with the ability to use their own initiative and judgement to resolve issues. The applicant should be experienced in the administration of SACT and Oncology or Haematology experience is essential. Assessment skills are vital in this role as clarity of message, decision making and picking up on verbal cues are crucial therefore candidates should have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and be willing to develop new clinical skills. The applicant will be expected to contribute to the development of clinical practice in a positive manner to maintain a consistent and motivated day treatment focus. Applicants should have a tactful, sensitive manner, work well under pressure, with a flexible approach and a willingness to contribute to improvements in the service. Previous experience in an acute setting, sound clinical assessment skills, demonstrable leadership experience along with a commitment to learning new skills are all essential to the role. A full induction and training will be provided. The role is supervised and clearly linked to competencies that require completion within a pre-arranged time frame.

The SACT Specialist Nurse will:
• Lead in a specific area(s) of SACT administration and/or practice, making recommendations, coordinating the project(s) and developing practice guidelines based upon robust evidence, gained from risk assessment, pharmaceutical industry, audit and literature review.
• Accept patient referrals to agreed criteria and be identified as the key worker for an agreed regimen(s) and patient/client caseload.
• Provide advice, education and support to patients, their carers/families and other health care professionals.
• Practice clinically in agreed care settings according to the department’s approved protocols or guidance.
• Contribute to the efficient running of the SACT Specialist Nurse Service.
• Work across departmental boundaries.
• Liaise with other hospital and community teams along agreed pathways to support the delivery of patient and family centered care.
• Contribute to the ongoing development of the service
