Candidates must have a minimum of 6 months NHS experience within Acute Medicine as a Consultant.
Main Responsibilities and Duties
1.
To show dynamism, enthusiasm and flexibility in participating in the reshaping of acute medical services at Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust and to work closely with the Clinical Lead and Clinical Director of Medicine.
2.
To help provide a first-class clinical service to all Trust patients.
3.
To provide high quality leadership and support to medical staff, allied health care professionals, and Trust management and support staff in both the Acute Medicine Service and associated medical specialty areas.
4.
To support and sustain teaching and research where possible in relevant clinical areas.
5.
To work within the framework of applicable Trust policies, procedures, and clinical governance framework.
6.
To work within contractual requirements, and in support of applicable Trust clinical development frameworks, business plans, and development strategies.
7.
To consistently treat all patients and colleagues with respect and professionalism and to adhere to the principles of the Trust regarding equality and diversity.
Clinical
8.
To share in the organisation and provision of high-quality clinical care for acute medical patients within the Trust.
9.
To assess and review patients within the setting of the Acute Medical Unit and SDEC, including performing appropriate clinical procedures in this setting.
10.
To facilitate the early discharge of acute medical patients, including where necessary, by early review in the Acute Medical Unit/SDEC review clinics, where clinically appropriate.
11.
To provide senior support and input into clinical decisions taken by junior medical staff within the Acute Medical Unit / SDEC.
12.
To ensure the provision of accurate and timely communication between the Acute Medical Unit/ SDEC, other units within the Trust (including critical care), and in primary or intermediate care settings.
13.
To work to provide smooth, timely and appropriate transfer of patients to appropriate specialty beds within the Trust.
14.
To participate in the development and implementation of care pathways for common medical emergency presentations.
15.
To participate in the out-of-hours medical on-call rota at weekends (the intensity is site dependent), such on-call including assuming clinical responsibility for the care of all medical patients within the Trust (including those outside of the Acute Medical Unit).
If requested and agreed with the Clinical Directors for Medicine, to contribute to a sub-specialty service in the form of clinics, procedural lists and specialist ward referrals.

Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust is a large acute provider, providing a full range of secondary care services across three sites (St Helier, Epsom and Sutton) to more than 420,000 people living in South West London and Surrey. This post will based at both Epsom and St Helier Hospitals, although post holders may be required to work flexibly across any Trust sites including community outreach clinics.
The Trust is committed to clinicians leading and managing service delivery. All specialties work within a structure of Divisions. Each Division is headed by a Medical Director, Director of Nursing and Divisional Director of Operations supported by General Managers and Service Managers. These units are responsible for the delivery of high-quality, cost-effective day-to-day care and have responsibility and accountability for the operation of clinical services. Leadership development is encouraged and supported at all levels and there are excellent relationships between clinicians and managers throughout the Trust.
