Ready to impact a better future? As a Boatmaster in our Defence and Maritime Services team, you’ll take command of vessels and lead colleagues to deliver safe, reliable operations that keep people and assets moving with confidence. You’ll make decisions that protect life at sea, safeguard the environment, and keep our customers’ missions on track.
You’ll help create impactful solutions with real purpose – from maintaining the highest safety standards to ensuring every task supports our customers and communities. Our work touches lives, and you’ll have the headroom to grow while building trust through care, professionalism, and innovation.
What you’ll do as a Boatmaster:
Take command of the vessel and crew, always ensuring safe operations.
Lead day‑to‑day navigation and compliance with the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW 1995), the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL), and the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs).
· Liaise with the Operations team and management, aligning vessel resources to meet customer requirements.
· Train and orientate deck colleagues, promoting a strong safety culture and excellent customer service.
· Maintain onboard records and publications, assisting with risk assessments and Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) registers.
· Uphold environmental protection measures and ensure company policies and temporary instructions are communicated and followed.
Does this sound like you?
You’ll be a great fit for this role if you have:
- A valid Boatmaster licence and an ENG1 medical certificate (Minimum)
- In date STCH95 basic safety training.
- An STCW 1995 Certificate of Competency for the vessel you’ll be operating (desirable)
- Health and safety awareness and the ability to coach others.
- An understanding of planned maintenance systems (such as Maximo).
- The ability to obtain Home Office Security Clearance; endorsements for push–pull, passenger carrying (including pilots), or dangerous cargo are desirable.
This role requires Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) clearance, which involves verifying your identity, employment history, nationality, and criminal record to meet government security standards. In addition, depending on the nature of the role, you may need to obtain formal Security Clearance (such as CTC or SC), which includes more detailed background checks on employment, criminal record, and financial history to ensure suitability for working in secure environments. Please note that UK residency requirements may apply for certain levels of clearance. You will also complete an Occupational Health Questionnaire so we can identify and provide any support you may need to undertake the role effectively.
