A Band 3 Health Care Support Worker in the Emergency Department plays a crucial role in delivering high-quality, timely, and compassionate care to patients experiencing urgent or life-threatening conditions. Working under the supervision of registered nurses and as part of the wider multidisciplinary team, the post-holder supports clinical staff in managing a fast-paced, unpredictable environment where priorities can rapidly change.

The role involves providing direct patient care, performing enhanced clinical duties aligned with Band 3 responsibilities, and contributing to the smooth flow of patients through the department. Key aspects include undertaking observations, assisting with basic procedures, supporting patient comfort and safety, and maintaining accurate documentation.

Band 3 HCSWs in ED are also expected to use initiative, recognise deteriorating patients, escalate concerns appropriately, and uphold infection prevention and safeguarding standards at all times.

This position requires excellent communication skills, emotional resilience, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. Working in ED offers the chance to develop advanced clinical skills, support innovative service delivery, and make a meaningful impact on patient care at critical moments.

To work as part of a multidisciplinary team in the Emergency Department providing high-quality patient-centred care.

The post-holder will support registered nurses and clinicians in delivering safe, timely and effective treatment to patients attending with a wide range of urgent and emergency conditions.

Key Duties and Responsibilities Clinical Duties:
• Undertake a range of clinical observations including blood pressure, pulse, respirations, temperature, oxygen saturation, pain scores, blood glucose, and ECGs ensuring accurate documentation and promptly reporting abnormalities.
• Assist in basic clinical procedures such as wound care, splinting, plaster application and specimen collection.
• Provide personal care and support with activities of daily living, maintaining dignity, privacy and comfort at all times.
• Prepare treatment areas, cubicles and equipment in line with infection prevention and control standards.
• Support rapid turnover of cubicles to ensure smooth patient flow. - Communicate clearly and compassionately with patients, relatives and carers providing reassurance and information within own scope of practice.
• Work collaboratively with nurses, doctors, allied health professionals, porters, and administrative teams.
• Use electronic and written systems for accurate record-keeping in line with Trust policies.
