Temporary Catering Assistant
Required to start 13th April 2026
Salary: NJC J Scale – starting salary £24,926 FTE (£12.92 per hour) - £2,810 pro rata - pending pay review
Hours: 5 per week 11:50am-12:50pm, Monday to Friday, term time only (38 weeks). You will be paid for 43.51 weeks per year including holidays.Contract: temporary contract initially to be reviewed in line with school needsA vacancy has arisen for a Catering Assistant to join our wonderful and welcoming school team at Bishopstone CE Primary School.
The Catering Assistant is a key member of the school team and is essential to the smooth running of the lunch time meal service. The role requires you to set up for lunch service and serve meals which have been prepared at another school. Have a friendly and welcoming personality is essential as is the ability to work well as part of a team.
The duties of the Catering Assistant include:
Prepare the village hall or classroom for meal service, including setting out tables, serving meals to children at the specified time, and clearing away after service.
Check food temperatures on arrival, accurately record readings in the daily logbook, and report any concerns promptly.
Wash dishes, plates, cutlery, work surfaces, and floors in accordance with instructions and hygiene standards.
In the event of staff absence collect food using own vehicle.
Maintain high standards of hygiene and cleanliness, ensuring compliance with the Health and Safety at Work Act and Food Hygiene Standards.
Follow the school’s safeguarding policies and procedures, including Keeping Children Safe in Education requirements.
We are looking for a person who:
A basic level of literacy and numeracy.
Ability to communicate clearly and work as part of team.
A Level 2 Food Hygiene certificate – please let us know if you do not have this as training can be arranged.
This role required an enhanced DBS clearance.
Willingness to undertake training as required including - annual safeguarding training.
Willingness to be flexible to the needs of the school and provide cover in the event of staff absence (overtime and mileage expenses would be paid in line with school policy).
Clean driving license – will need business use on car insurance which can normally be added without cost – please speak to us if you have any concerns.
Ability to use relevant equipment.
Ability to relate well to children and adults.
Awareness of COSHH regulations.
Awareness of hygiene procedures.
