The Opportunity
We are looking for a Fixed Asset Accountant to join Barnsley College and play a key role in managing our fixed assets and capital investment programme.
Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, you will take ownership of fixed asset accounting and capital expenditure processes, ensuring strong financial control and compliance with accounting standards and regulations. Acting as a trusted finance partner, you will support colleagues across the College with expert advice on capital projects and asset management, helping to ensure long‑term value for money.
This role is ideal for a part‑qualified accountant who enjoys working with complex financial data and contributing to strategic financial planning within a large organisation.
What You’ll Be Doing
Managing and maintaining the fixed asset register in line with accounting standards and College policies
Maintain and update the fixed asset register in accordance with financial policies and relevant accounting standards
Processing capital expenditure transactions and reconciling them to the general ledger
Preparing monthly and year‑end depreciation journals and control account reconciliations
Monitoring capital project spend and producing reports for the CFO and budget holders
Supporting capital investment proposals and capital funding applications
Reviewing asset disposals, transfers, impairments and write‑offs
Supporting internal and external audits with schedules and financial analysis
Providing advice and guidance on capital expenditure and asset management processes
Ensuring capital grants are spent in line with funding conditions
About You
You will be a detail‑focused and analytical finance professional with experience in fixed asset accounting and capital expenditure. You will be confident managing complex processes, ensuring accuracy and maintaining strong financial controls.
As a part‑qualified accountant (CIMA, ACCA or equivalent), you will have strong technical accounting knowledge and be able to communicate financial information clearly to both finance and non‑finance colleagues. You will be organised, methodical and able to manage competing priorities while maintaining high standards.
Required
GCSE English and Maths at Grade C/4 or above (or equivalent Level 2 qualification)
Part‑qualified accountant (CIMA, ACCA or equivalent)
Experience maintaining a fixed asset register
Experience designing, maintaining or operating fixed asset internal controls
Strong technical accounting knowledge relating to fixed assets
High level of attention to detail and accuracy
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
