The Foundation Year 1 (FY1) Doctor is a newly qualified medical practitioner undertaking the first year of the UK Foundation Programme. The post holder works under close supervision to develop core clinical competencies in the assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients across a range of specialties.

The role combines direct patient care, participation in multidisciplinary teams, and ongoing professional development to ensure safe, effective, and compassionate clinical practice. It is also part of an on-call rota.

· Assess and clerk patients admitted to the ward or acute care setting.

· Perform comprehensive history-taking and physical examinations.

· Formulate differential diagnoses and initial management plans under supervision.

· Prescribe medications safely in accordance with local and national guidelines.

· Perform routine clinical procedures appropriate to level of competence (e.g., venepuncture, cannulation, ABGs).

· Review and monitor patients’ progress, documenting findings clearly in medical records.

· Recognise and escalate deteriorating patients appropriately.

· Participate in daily ward rounds and contribute to patient management discussions.

· Liaise with nursing staff, allied health professionals, and specialty teams.

· Complete discharge summaries and ensure accurate handover of care.

· Attend multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings where required.

· Participate in out-of-hours rotas, including nights and weekends, as scheduled.

The postholder will be indemnified by thetrust for all NHS work undertaken as part of the contract of employment.

It is advised however that in addition the post holder should take out adequate professional defence cover for such activities as do not fall within the scope of the Trustindemnityscheme,suchasworkundertakenoutsidetheNHS, suchasGoodSamaritanacts.
