A Vacancy at Northern Lincolnshire & Goole NHS Foundation Trust.

An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and energetic person to join the busy Blood Sciences department at Scunthorpe General Hospital as a Biomedical Scientist/Trainee Biomedical Scientist (AfC Band 5/ Annex 21). The department is part of Path Links which is a networked NHS Pathology Service offering a wide range of diagnostic investigations on tissue, blood, and fluid samples across Lincolnshire.

The successful candidate will be HCPC-registered (Band 5 BMS) or be working towards their registration portfolio (trainee BMS). Following orientation and familiarisation with our working procedures, the post holder will be an integral part of the Blood Sciences department, responsible for processing, reading, interpreting and reporting on a variety of samples using both manual and automated systems.

Dealing with telephone calls from clinical staff will also be part of the role. HCPC-registered candidates will also be required to take part in a 24/7 shift rota which will include some evenings, nights and weekend and bank holiday working. Trainee candidates will be expected to work some weekend day shifts during their training and once this is completed and once HCPC registered, they will take part in the 24/7 shift rota. Successful applicants will also be expected to support the department in aspects of quality management, including maintaining UKAS accreditation through compliance with training competencies and organisational procedures and policies.
General Responsibilities
• Sample Analysis: Perform routine and specialised laboratory tests on blood and other body fluids, ensuring accuracy and precision.
• Quality Control: Conduct quality control checks on equipment, reagents, and test results to ensure compliance with laboratory standards.
• Equipment Maintenance: Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment, including analysers, centrifuges, and microscopes.
• Health & Safety: Adhere to health and safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe handling of biohazardous materials.
Administrative & Regulatory
• Documentation: Maintain accurate records of laboratory procedures, results, and quality control measures.
• Clinical Audit Participation: Contribute to audits, research, and development projects to improve laboratory services.
• Training & Supervision: Assist in the training and supervision of junior staff, laboratory assistants, and trainees.
• Compliance & Accreditation: Ensure adherence to regulatory standards (e.g., ISO15189:2022, MHRA) and participate in accreditation processes.

Participate in the provision of a 24 hour ‘Out of hours’ service where operated or participation in extended day staff rota as appropriate. This will require taking responsibility for the laboratory service and support staff during the shift period without direct supervision.
