Job Title: Handy Person / Gardener
Location: Park Farm Lodge
Reports to: Home Manager / Maintenance Manager
Hours: 16 per week
Job Purpose
To maintain the care home’s gardens, grounds, and building to a safe, clean, and welcoming standard. The role ensures that residents, staff, and visitors enjoy a well-kept environment that supports safety, comfort, and wellbeing.
Key Responsibilities:
Gardening Duties
Maintain lawns, flower beds, shrubs, and trees.
Plant, prune, weed, water, and fertilize as required.
Ensure outdoor spaces are safe, tidy, and accessible for residents (including mobility aid access).
Maintain pathways, patios, and seating areas.
Remove garden waste and ensure proper disposal.
Monitor and report any hazards in outdoor areas.
Handyman / Maintenance Duties
Carry out minor repairs and general maintenance (e.g., painting, basic plumbing, carpentry, replacing fixtures).
Conduct routine inspections of the building and grounds.
Ensure furniture, fittings, and equipment are safe and in good condition.
Replace light bulbs, repair door handles, fix leaks, and complete basic DIY tasks.
Liaise with external contractors when specialist repairs are required.
Maintain maintenance logs and records.
Health & Safety
Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.
Maintain safe storage of tools, equipment, and hazardous materials.
Follow infection control procedures in line with care home policies.
Undertake risk assessments related to maintenance and gardening tasks.
Resident Interaction
Engage respectfully and positively with residents.
Support residents’ enjoyment of the garden where appropriate.
Maintain confidentiality and safeguarding standards at all times.
Person Specification
Essential
Experience in gardening and/or property maintenance.
Basic DIY skills (painting, plumbing, carpentry).
Knowledge of health and safety practices.
Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
Good communication skills.
Reliable and trustworthy.
Desirable
Previous experience in a care home or healthcare setting.
Basic knowledge of COSHH regulations.
First Aid training.
Relevant maintenance or horticulture qualification.
Personal Qualities
Patient, friendly, and respectful toward elderly residents.
Practical and hands-on approach.
Observant and proactive in identifying issues.
Flexible and willing to assist with ad hoc tasks.
