Situated within the heart of the Cambridge-Peterborough Growth Area, Huntingdonshire is a beautiful district that boasts thriving market towns and many attractive villages, each with its own identity. We are an innovative and forward-thinking local authority whose residents are at the heart of our decision-making.
At HDC we want to employ staff who embody our icare values (Inspiring, Collaborative, Accountable, Respectful, Enterprising), all of which support our ultimate purpose of putting our customers first.
Job details
Are you an enthusiastic town planner looking to help shape the future of a growing and ambitious district? Huntingdonshire District Council is looking for a Planning Policy Officer to join our friendly and forward-thinking Planning Policy Team. This is an exciting opportunity to develop your career in a dynamic pro-growth area.
We’re pushing forward to get a new Local Plan adopted under the current legislation. We completed public engagement on a Preferred Options draft Local Plan last December and are now moving forward to a Proposed Submission draft Local Plan for this summer. In December, we aim to submit the Local Plan to 2046 for examination during 2027.
About the role
You will support the creation and implementation of planning policies and site allocations that ensure Huntingdonshire’s growth is sustainable, deliverable and evidence led. You will help to finalise policies and site allocations and their supporting sustainability appraisals.
A key focus of this role is monitoring delivery of housing and employment development, calculating our 5 year housing land supply and establishing a realistic housing delivery trajectory. You will lead on preparation of the Annual Monitoring Report and maintaining key datasets.
You will work with local communities and colleagues across the council to support the preparation of Neighbourhood Plans, providing advice to those preparing them and supporting their examination.
As the Proposed Submission draft Local Plan moves forward, you will be involved in consultation activities and preparation for the Examination in Public.
Who we are looking for
An enthusiastic, dynamic policy-focused town planner who is confident in managing a varied workload with competing priorities to help progress the new Local Plan in an ambitious timescale.
You will be able to analyse information and data, think critically, and communicate clearly both in writing and verbally.
You will be keen to learn and expand your experience in a small team that takes a collaborative approach to work and problem-solving.
What we can offer you
You will be given opportunities to use your initiative, expand your skills and have a positive impact on Huntingdonshire’s future.
Our planning teams are experienced, collaborative, and supportive. You’ll be surrounded by colleagues who are happy to share their knowledge and genuinely keen to support your career growth.
We operate hybrid working arrangements with 2 days a week in the office and 3 days working from home. If you prefer to work part-time, please let us know how many hours/ days a week you are looking to work.
An offer of employment is conditional upon having the right to work in the UK. HDC does not hold a Sponsorship Licence and is unable to provide a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) or take over sponsorship for any role.
To apply for this position, please complete the application form.
The closing date is 9am 2 March 2026 and interviews will be held the week commencing 11 March 2026.
However, this is a rolling campaign and we'll be reviewing applications on an ongoing basis and will close the advert early should we receive suitable applications, so please don't delay in applying!
For many of our roles, our hybrid work model enables employees to work remotely while allowing for in-office collaboration opportunities across the district, with an expectation of being in the office at least two days a week. However, please note that some positions may require a more consistent presence in the office due to the nature of the work.
Should you have any additional questions regarding submitting an application, please contact the Recruitment Team at recruitment@huntingdonshire.gov.uk.
Please note that the official closing date is as above, and will be the correct date. Some third-party websites may have different dates. Please refer to the HDC website for the official closing date to ensure you do not miss out on applying.
