Summary

Assistant Dairy Herd Manager – South East Scotland - £40,000 – £60,000 + Accommodation

The Job:
An excellent opportunity has arisen for a hands-on Assistant Dairy Herd Manager to join a progressive indoor dairy operation in South East Scotland. Working closely with the Owner / Herd Manager, the successful candidate will play a key role in supporting day-to-day herd management and stepping into leadership responsibility when required. The role involves working alongside an established team of eight staff and contributing to the management of a high-performing herd of approximately 500 milking cows, along with youngstock and calves at foot.

Key Responsibilities:
- Support the Owner / Herd Manager in the day-to-day running of the dairy operation
- Take operational responsibility for herd management in the manager’s absence
- Milking and overseeing the performance of a 500-cow indoor herd
- Heifer and calf management, ensuring strong health, welfare, and growth performance
- Carry out and support AI breeding programmes
- Assist with staff coordination and daily task planning
- Maintain high standards of animal welfare, hygiene, and operational efficiency

The Candidate:
- Previous experience in a dairy herd management or senior herdsperson role
- Practical experience carrying out AI
- Strong hands-on approach with the ability to lead when required
- Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a team environment
- Committed to high animal welfare and herd performance standards

The Package:
- Salary: £40,000 – £60,000 depending on experience
