Role To support midwives to ensure all women receive optimum care.To implement a plan of care devised by a midwife, to pregnant women, postnatal women and new born babies, within the hospital setting (the level of responsibility for which will depend on the competence of the individual and the discretion of the supervising midwife).Perform a range of delegated patient duties including the recording of patient Details. Job Purpose The scope of the practice of Maternity Support Workers is formally set out by the Royal College of Midwives in their document The roles and responsibilities of MSWs RCM Position Statement 2010. They are directly transcribed into this Job Description. Key Responsibilities and Duties To provide support wherever the need is greatest within the clinic setting, acting autonomously in the delivery of patient care. Support includes: Care and support of women, babies and their familiesDeveloping positive relationships with families, parents and carersSupporting individuals during and following clinical/therapeutic activities.Support individuals who are distressed.Providing individual support to vulnerable mothers and familiesManage and organise time and activities to support and meet the needs of individuals.To promote health and wellbeing of mother and baby through health promotion.To empower women and their families to make their own decisions about health and choices. Clinical Responsibilities To undertake safe phlebotomy practice as requested by the midwife.Work autonomously performing blood sample procedures including Glucose Tolerance Testing.At the request of the midwife, perform and record physiological measurements within the remit of the MSW role and report accurately to the midwife, the assessment undertaken.Obtaining samples at the request of a midwife, including urine samples.Perform maternal observations for women who attend clinic. Communication To communicate with relevant professionals in statutory and non-statutory organisations, using clear written and verbal means of communication, communicating with women and families in a sensitive manner.To ensure records are legible, accurate, contemporaneous, signed, dated and are maintained in accordance with Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC) guidelines and Trust Policy on Record Keeping.To use interpreters as needed, to enable families with English as a second language and those with sensory impairment to access the service.To be able to communicate complex and sensitive information in an understandable format to women, their families and other professionals. Leadership, Management and Team Working To implement and evaluate patient care by following agreed plans, policies, procedures and clinical guidelines including the delivery of specified activities which are agreed for the job role/purpose.Contribute to the team working and planning of care in clinical area.Contribute to the development of networks with other organisations.Contribute to the development new ways of providing services that promote parental participation and ownership. Safeguarding Children To work with parents to promote positive parenting in order to prevent child maltreatment.To support the implementation of the child protection plans in collaboration with other health and social service professionals.To support the contribution of the skill mix team to child protection practice To support vulnerable women and their families through the provision of appropriate clinic services.To share information on a need-to-know basis with all relevant agencies Public Health and Health Promotion.Works with members of the team to reducing health inequalities, addressing particular needs of communities, who are likely to achieve poor outcomes.Liaises with other agencies for the provision of client care.Ensures services provided are based on clear evidence to meet identified needs.Contribute to the development of a notification and referral system so that all families are signposted to appropriate services.Contribute to the establishment of systems for review of progress in meeting targets and objectives.Supports the leadership and development of the midwifery teams so that they are able to function effectively.Ensures effective communication systems in place to support clinic development initiatives.Participates in collaborative activity with other partners and agencies to improve and develop service delivery using an evaluative tool.Develops and sustains effective working relationships with other professionals and agencies.
