Do you enjoy working directly with collections, keeping records accurate, and getting things done in a busy environment where no two days are the same?
About us
The 545-acre Science and Innovation Park is the home of the Science Museum Group's National Collections Centre (NCC), our hub for collections management and access. The National Collections Centre is transforming how we care, manage, and make accessible over 400,000 objects and 1.5M items in our Library and Archive. A new collections management facility houses a vast range of objects in the collection from microscope slides to railway carriages, other objects are stored in repurposed aircraft hangars, sustainable hempcrete constructed buildings and other facilities dispersed across the park.
There's something really special about working at the Science and Innovation Park. You are surrounded by the stunning Wiltshire countryside, with ever-changing weather, spectacular sunsets and lots of wildlife to spot as you move around the site. But the best part of the NCC is the people, you'll be joining a wonderful and passionate community of individuals.
About the role
As part of the Collections Project Officers team, you will document, hazard survey and condition assess and already stored at SIP. You will also assist with the preparation, packing and transport of objects across the SIP site and into a new collections store. You will be working primarily with SMG's larger objects, ranging in size from aircraft and vehicles to television sets and cameras.
The role will follow a rapid inventory workflow, systematically working through objects to ensure they are accurately recorded in the collections database. You will be using barcode scanning technology and SMG's database (Mimsy XG) to track and catalogue a very diverse collection. You will assist bringing objects to Junior Photographers to have record photographs of each object.
You will receive training to identify and record hazardous materials in the collection, ensure this data is recorded in the collections management system, and make sure objects are labelled appropriately. You will ensure that these tasks are carried out in a safe and secure manner to comply with current legislation and following best professional practice. You will also be involved in the preparation and packing of objects for transport and ultimately in the transportation of objects across the SIP site into existing hangar storage and the new collections store.
We are currently recruiting 2x Collections Project Officers, both fixed term contracts until July 2026. You will be working on site 35 hours per week Monday to Friday and you will be based at the Science and Innovation Park.
About you
We're keen to hear from candidates who show consistent reliability, are proactive, quick to learn and motivated by getting things done well. You'll bring collections-based experience and an understanding of museum documentation, with confidence using collections management systems and databases, while being open to learning and developing further skills on the job.
You'll be highly organised with close attention to detail, comfortable working to tight deadlines and able to stay methodical and effective in a busy, deadline-driven environment. Practical experience of object handling, packing, and collections care is important, alongside a good understanding of health and safety practice, including working safely with hazardous materials and using risk assessments and method statements. You'll enjoy working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, communicate clearly with a wide range of colleagues and external partners, and be adaptable in the face of change.
Above all, we're looking for someone who is values-driven, evidence-led in their decision-making, and passionate about contributing to an open and inclusive organisation, with an interest in developing experience across areas such as collections movement projects, storage, photography, and working with volunteers.
Don't feel you meet all the criteria? We welcome you to apply even if your experience doesn't match directly. With your transferable skills, you could be the right candidate for this, or other opportunities that we have.
