Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced Production Manager to work on a contract basis for a leading rolling stock organisation in Leeds. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing depot production activities to ensure rolling stock maintenance, refurbishment, and modification programmes are delivered safely, on time, within cost, and to the required quality standards.
This is a hands-on leadership role within a safety-critical rail environment, requiring strong operational control, people management, and technical understanding of rolling stock maintenance activities.

Key Responsibilities
- Manage day-to-day production and maintenance activities within the rolling stock depot
- Ensure all work is delivered in line with safety, quality, cost, and delivery targets
- Lead and coordinate multi-disciplinary teams including mechanical, electrical, and technical staff
- Plan and control workloads to maintain fleet availability and programme milestones
- Ensure compliance with Railway Group Standards, company procedures, and safety regulations
- Monitor productivity, progress, and resource utilisation, taking corrective action where required
- Liaise with engineering, quality, supply chain, and client stakeholders to resolve issues and maintain delivery
- Ensure work is carried out in accordance with engineering documentation, VMIs, work instructions, and plans
- Manage defects, rework, and emerging issues to minimise disruption to production
- Support continuous improvement initiatives to improve efficiency, quality, and safety performance
- Conduct briefings, toolbox talks, and performance reviews to maintain clear communication
- Report on progress, risks, and KPIs to senior management and the client

Skills & Experience Required
- Proven experience as a Production Manager or Senior Operations Manager within the rolling stock or rail maintenance environment
- Strong understanding of rolling stock maintenance, overhaul, refurbishment, or modification activities
- Experience managing safety-critical operations in a depot or manufacturing setting
- Sound technical knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems on rail vehicles
- Strong people management and leadership skills
- Ability to plan, prioritise, and deliver work to tight deadlines
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
- Experience working to KPIs, delivery schedules, and contractual requirements
- Competent with production reporting systems and basic IT tools
