About Me

I’m a 43-year-old Open University student. I'm an avid reader and writer, passionate about literature, sci-fi, fantasy, theatre, and cinema, and I enjoy thoughtful, engaging conversation. I have hemiplegia, which affects the left side of my body, and I use an electric wheelchair for a lot of out-of-the-house activities. I also identify as neurodivergent, with traits often associated with ADHD and autism. This means I can sometimes experience time-blindness, executive dysfunction, or cognitive overload - making planning, prioritising, or switching tasks more challenging. At times, I may hyperfocus deeply on something or experience overwhelm.

About the Role

I am seeking a Personal Assistant / Support Worker to help me with practical tasks and who can provide adaptive assistance and companionship. This role does not include personal or medical care tasks.

Practical Support

  • Assist with household organisation, including laundry and general upkeep.
  • Drive to weekly exercise class and other ad-hoc appointments and activities, including loading and unloading a foldable electric wheelchair (following handling guidelines).
  • Assist with very occasional travel by public transport, e.g. boarding or disembarking trains and coaches.

Social and Emotional Support

  • Offer general companionship and well-being support while respecting boundaries.
  • Accompany me to a weekly fitness class to provide encouragement and motivation.
  • Provide gentle support around planning, time management, and task initiation.
  • Accompany me to social, leisure and community activities such as the theatre or cinema.

About You

I’m looking for someone kind, intuitive, and emotionally intelligent - someone who can read a situation, respond with empathy, and help me find balance. You should be calm, patient, and perceptive, offering gentle reminders and encouragement when needed, while respecting my independence and boundaries. You’ll be comfortable around neurodiversity, adaptable when plans change, and able to bring a sense of humour and warmth to everyday interactions. Above all, you’ll approach support with compassion, intuition, flexibility, and understanding - helping me stay grounded, organised, and confident in my own autonomy.

Essential Qualities

  • Empathetic, patient, and emotionally intelligent, able to recognise and respond to subtle shifts in mood, energy, or focus.
  • Calm, grounded, and adaptable, maintaining composure during stress or unexpected changes.
  • Comfortable with neurodiversity and emotional expression, offering support without being controlling.
  • Strong communication skills and active listening, with compassion and sensitivity.
  • Sense of humour and ability to create a relaxed, positive atmosphere.
  • Organised and proactive, with practical problem-solving skills.
  • Reliable, discreet, and trustworthy, maintaining confidentiality at all times.
  • Physically able to assist with wheelchair handling and mobility support as needed.

Practical Requirements

  • Experience in personal assistance, support work, or care (formal qualifications not required).
  • Clean UK driving licence and reliable vehicle (insured for business use).
  • Reasonable physical fitness to support mobility tasks.
  • Satisfactory DBS check and two references (from previous employers or clients and someone you know personally).

Additional Desirable Qualities

  • Experience of neurodiversity, ADHD, autism, or mental health support.
  • Interest in literature, theatre, film, sci-fi, or fantasy.
  • A friendly person who is easy to talk to and finds it natural to get along and have a conversation with others.
  • Open to using technology in ways that support my independence
  • A collaborative problem solver who can work with me to find practical solutions and adapt when plans need to change.

Job specifics

  • Hours: Minimum of five hours per week, to include Fridays 12:30–2:30 PM (fitness class). Additional hours by mutual agreement (may include weekdays, evenings, or weekends).
  • Remuneration: £15/hour, paid monthly. Mileage and travel costs for activities reimbursed. Blue Badge parking is available when needed.
