From grounds maintenance and cleansing to highways land and commercial contracts, Streetscene plays a vital role in how residents, businesses and visitors experience the borough. We are looking for a Streetscene Supervisor to join our Management Team and help deliver high‑quality, compliant and customer‑focused services across Reading.
About The Role:
The role is situated at 19 Bennet Road, Reading, Berkshire, RG2 0QX
We are looking for a Streetscene Supervisor to start from March 2026.
Working as part of the Streetscene Management Team and reporting to the Streetscene Senior Operations Officer, you will supervise day‑to‑day operations across a wide range of Streetscene services, including grounds maintenance and cleansing on council‑owned and highway land.
This is a varied and hands‑on role where no two days are the same. You’ll plan and programme work, lead frontline teams, manage vehicles and plant, and ensure services are delivered safely, efficiently and to a high standard.
You’ll also play an important role in supporting the council’s commercial ambitions, helping to deliver income‑generating contracts and identify opportunities for continuous service improvement.
The role is highly visible and involves regular interaction with residents, Councillors, contractors and community groups. You’ll act as an ambassador for Streetscene Services, helping to build community pride and confidence in the public realm.
Key responsibilities:
Supervise and lead Streetscene maintenance teams, providing clear, visible and effective leadership on site
Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation, including the Environmental Protection Act and Highways Act
Oversee the safe use, inspection and daily checks of vehicles, plant, tools and equipment
Monitor performance of staff and contractors, addressing health & safety, conduct and service standards
Respond to customer, resident and Councillor enquiries and complaints with a strong focus on customer care
Support commercial contracts and help identify opportunities to improve efficiency and generate income
Provide supervisory cover at weekends and during emergencies on a rotational basis
Promote community pride, ownership and high‑quality public realm outcomes across Reading
About You:
You’ll be an experienced supervisor from a public realm, environmental services, construction or similar operational background, with the confidence to lead people, manage competing priorities and make sound decisions on the ground.
You’ll enjoy working in a customer‑facing environment and take pride in delivering services that residents see and value every day.
You will bring:
A full UK driving licence min Cat: C1
Strong knowledge of health & safety requirements and statutory duties within streetscene or environmental services
Experience planning and overseeing work programmes and day‑to‑day vehicle and plant operations
The ability to motivate, influence and lead teams to deliver high standards
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the confidence to deal with the public and elected members
Good IT skills, including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Teams and Excel
A commercial mindset, with the ability to support income generation and efficient use of resources
You’ll be part of a team that relies on each individual to play their part to the best of their ability. As well as the colleagues that you work closely with every day, you’ll also be part of Team Reading, playing your personal part in making Reading a successful and vibrant place.
Our vision is to ensure that Reading realises its potential as a great place to live, work and play, and that everyone shares the benefits of this success. Our values and behaviours guide how we will achieve this:

Make a Difference to Reading - maintain the highest levels of customer service and be flexible and willing to provide the services needed at the time they are needed.
Our offer:
We offer a supportive environment to grow and develop your career with the opportunity to put your ideas across. Innovation and ambition are strongly encouraged, and you’ll get a great feel for that working in our friendly and collaborative environment.
