Foster Carer - Providing a Home from Home

Home from Home supports children and young people in care by providing them with a safe, welcoming family environment for short periods of time, often just a few nights a month when their foster carers take a break to rest and recharge.

These short stays help maintain stable homes for children in care, support foster carers' wellbeing and ensure children continue to feel safe, valued and cared for.

This role is ideal for people who want to foster but may not be able to offer full time care. You don't need a spare room, just a room that can be made available for when a child needs a place to stay.

What does a Home from Home carer do?

Home from Home carers offer planned, short-term care for children and young people in care, such as;

Occasional overnight stays
Short weekend stays
Planned breaks agreed in advance.

Children placed with Home from Home carers are already living with established foster carers, your role is to provide them with a welcoming, nurturing home from home for a few nights at a time.

Do I need a spare room?

No, you do not need a permanently available bedroom.

You'll need a room that can be made into a bedroom when a child comes to stay, for example;

A study or a home office
A room normally used by grandchildren or guests when they come to visit
A bedroom used by an adult child who is away at university or living elsewhere.

The flexibility means you can offer a home from home without needing to keep a bedroom empty all your round.

Who is this role for?

This role may suit people who:

Want to foster but cannot commit to full-time care
Have a flexible living space that can be adapted when needed
Want to support foster carers and help maintain a stable home for a child in care.

You don't need previous fostering experience; training and support will be provided.

Support and Payment

As a Home from Home foster carer with Fostering Rotherham, you'll receive;

A fostering allowance for each stay
Full preparation training
Ongoing support from a supervising social worker
Access to other Fostering Rotherham benefits.

Why Home from Home matters
