We're on a journey to build a workforce reflective of our Borough.
We are committed to fostering diverse teams where everybody can bring their authentic selves to work and feel that they belong. If you want to work for a Council where everybody is encouraged to meet their full potential and make a difference in our neighbourhoods, we would love to hear from you!
Your role:
You will oversee around 80 operational staff, ensuring the effective delivery of three dispersed School Support Services: Local Kitchen (School Meals), Home to School Transport, and the School Crossing Patrol Service. As part of the Operational Management Team, supported initially by an Area Manager, you will focus on enabling staff to deliver high quality services. You will manage attendance processes, lead disciplinary investigations, support health and safety activity, deliver training, provide digital support, promote safeguarding, and assist with recruitment. This is a varied, fast paced, and challenging role, but one that is highly rewarding.
About you:
To succeed in this role, you’ll need strong people management and communication skills, with the confidence to support staff through attendance, performance, and disciplinary matters. The ability to hold constructive, and sometimes difficult, conversations is essential. You should understand key employment and health and safety procedures, be comfortable delivering training, and have solid digital capability to support staff and manage information. Highly organised and adaptable, you’ll assist with recruitment and work with professionalism, integrity, and discretion. Your staff rely on you for direction, guidance, and day to day support, so a positive, upbeat attitude is vital in helping them navigate a wide range of needs.
About us:
Wigan Council has been voted ‘Overall Council of the Year’ at the APSE (Association for Public Service Excellence) Awards. We are signed up to the Greater Manchester Continuous Service Commitment ensuring that your service will be continuous or 'unbroken' between the supporting organisations.
The Progress with Unity plan is a place movement for change for the next decade, bringing a new era for Wigan Borough. It draws on the strengths of our individual organisations, recognising that together we can achieve much more for our communities by delivering on our 2 place missions; create fair opportunities for all children, families, residents and businesses and make our towns and neighbourhoods flourish for those who live and work in them.
Wigan Council’s School Support Services are proud to play a key role in the borough’s Progress with Unity movement, a shared commitment to creating fair opportunities for all children, families, residents, and businesses, and helping every town and neighbourhood flourish by working in genuine partnership with our communities. Our teams embody the six ways of working that define this new era: seeing the person, listening deeply, knowing our place, doing the right thing, connecting to neighbourhoods, and showing our love and pride in everything we do. Together, we provide responsive, people centred services that support schools, strengthen communities, and help every child thrive.
Here at Wigan, we are proud to support flexible working patterns, when the service can accommodate this. We also take a blended approach to where we work, depending on the work we do. This may include working from home, the office, or the community. We like to thank our employees for their hard work and commitment by giving them the opportunity to access a range of exclusive rewards and benefits click here to find out more about working for #TeamWigan.
