The post holder will:


Work in all areas of the department on a rotational basis, working within set clinical protocols and IRMER regulations ensuring a high quality and efficient Radiographic Service.


Ensure consistency of medical imaging quality and standards of patient care in a wide range of clinical environments as well as to a diverse range of patient presentations.


Be able to take charge of the running of a work area in the absence of the Superintendent.

Leadership, Management and Service Delivery


 Deputise for the Modality Superintendent as required in the running of the work area
 Participate in a core hours service across 7 days including night shifts
 Act as a role model and support junior colleagues in the work area
 Contribute effectively to the delivery of an efficient and responsive Radiology Service and make recommendations on service improvement
 Report Clinical, Non-Clinical and Radiation incidents in line with Trust and Departmental Risk Management policies.


 Attend meetings as directed, including weekly departmental staff meetings.


 Provide guidance to external users regarding the priority and deployment of radiographic resource, e.g., theatre usage.

 Communicate and liaise with other departments/wards within the hospital and various external sources in order to provide a quality service to patients and clinicians.


Quality and Safety

 Ensure the highest standards of cleanliness of the environment and equipment are maintained
 Work as part of a team to maintain a clean, safe environment for staff and service users.
 Ensure that equipment faults are recorded appropriately and reported to the relevant Manager
 If required, liaise with patients to re-scheduled appointment in case of equipment breakdown.
 Understand and adhere to the requirements of IR(ME)R.


 Enter accurate data into Radiology Information System and the Trust PAS system ensuring patient confidentiality. All users are governed by the Data Protection Act (1984). Unauthorised disclosure of such information is regarded as gross misconduct and could result in disciplinary action up to and including dismissal


 Participate as appropriate in the implementation of the agreed departmental quality programme.


 Actively participate in the technical and patient focused aspects of the department’s Clinical Audit programme.

 Give the very highest standard of care to the cohort of patients for which you have been made responsible and to be able to carry out all tasks involved in ensuring that any patient in your care is successfully examined and well cared for.


 Act at all times with consideration for the safety and welfare of visitors and staff.


 Act as the patient’s advocate, ensuring that their needs and dignity are respected and that other healthcare staff exercise equal respect for patients’ rights whether a procedure is being carried out in the department or any remote location

To take responsibility for ensuring that all aspects of MRI Safety are observed for patients, self and others. Ensure that all persons entering the MRI environment have completed a checklist and removed all belongings that might be hazardous in the magnetic field or damaged by it. All belongings must be safely locked away. Be responsible for the exposure of the patient or escort to the MRI environment, in response to the answers provided on the checklist, according to local protocol.

Be fully aware of the bio-effects of MRI and ensure the MRI scanner is
operated within safe limits. This will involve risk/benefit decisions taking
individual patients and situations into account.

Be fully familiar with safety procedures specific to the MRI environment – e.g. fire, quench (rapid loss of helium gas from MRI scanner with displacement of oxygen), and cardiac arrest – where there is a potentially fatal risk to staff.

To possess HPC registration and to act at all times to the standards required to maintain registration.

To carry out duties in accordance with Trust policies and departmental protocols.

To be able to offer definitive advice to staff with information about protocols, policies and working practices.

To carry out all aspects of the professional role to a superior standard and act as a reference for Radiographers, Assistant Practitioners and students.
