School Caretaker
Location: Edgware
Contract: Full-time, Permanent (All year round)
Salary: £26,000-£28,000
Start Date: ASAP
Working Hours: 8am – 4pm, Monday to Friday
Role Overview
We are seeking a reliable, proactive, and hands-on School Caretaker to ensure the school site is maintained to a high standard and remains clean, safe, and secure at all times. The role involves general maintenance, supervision of cleaning staff, health and safety compliance, and day-to-day support across the school premises.
Key Responsibilities
Maintenance & Repairs
• Carry out minor repairs and general DIY tasks
• Undertake reactive and planned preventative maintenance (PPM)
• Support basic electrical, mechanical, and plumbing tasks
• Maintain building systems including lighting, emergency systems, and AHUs
Cleaning & Groundskeeping
• Supervise cleaning staff and ensure standards are maintained
• Keep communal areas clean, tidy, and presentable
• Maintain outdoor areas, fixtures, and pathways
• Oversee waste disposal and recycling processes
Security & Health & Safety
• Monitor site access points and respond to alarms
• Conduct routine fire alarm and emergency lighting tests
• Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations
• Record inspections and findings using an iPad or smartphone
Support Services
• Assist with porterage duties, including moving furniture and setting up rooms
• Liaise with contractors and external service providers when required
Person Specification
Experience
• Previous experience in a caretaking or site management role
• Practical experience in building maintenance and cleaning
• Strong DIY skills
• Experience working as part of a team
• Experience supervising a small team is desirable
Skills & Knowledge
• Good understanding of health and safety requirements
• Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, and general maintenance work
• Ability to work independently and manage workload effectively
• Strong organisation, planning, and prioritisation skills
• Good communication and problem-solving skills
Personal Qualities
• Physically fit and able to carry out manual work, including working at heights
• Flexible approach to working hours, including occasional out-of-school hours
• Reliable, proactive, and safety-conscious
Additional Requirements
• Enhanced DBS check required
• Relevant site or facilities-related qualifications desirable
