Blood Transfusion Laboratory Operational Manager

Band 8a

Hours: 37.5 per week, all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working

We have a fantastic opportunity for an experienced and dynamic Blood Transfusion Manager to lead a talented and motivated team of scientists, support staff, and Transfusion Practitioners within our ISO 15189-accredited Blood Science service at Milton Keynes. You will play a pivotal role in overseeing and developing high-quality transfusion laboratory services using Ortho Clinical Diagnostics Vision analysers and working within Clinisys WinPath Enterprise and Haemonetics BloodTrack systems.

The successful candidate will be an accomplished Biomedical Scientist (minimum Band 7 transfusion experience) with strong leadership, change management experience, and a postgraduate qualification (MSc or equivalent). You will bring deep working knowledge of the Blood Safety & Quality Regulations 2005 (BSQR), recognised quality system standards, and current best practice guidance to ensure clinical and regulatory excellence.

This role offers an exciting opportunity to shape and extend our service in partnership with clinical stakeholders and within the wider South-4 network, driving service improvement, innovation, and collaborative practice across regional transfusion pathways.

The post holder will manage and professionally direct a team of scientific and support staff to deliver a 24/7 diagnostic service that meets accreditation & regulatory requirements to deliver effective patient care and resource management. The post holder will ensure the diagnostic service is responsive to clinical needs and is developed accordingly.



The post holder will be a scientific/technical expert within their field and will embed a strategy to ensure all staff in their department are competent in practice and able to support the 24/7 service.



The post holder will undertake their responsibilities within the Blood Transfusion Laboratory service to meet all required national/Trust standards and regulatory compliance.



The post holder will support the Haematology Laboratory Operational Manager to deliver a cohesive Haematology/Blood Transfusion diagnostic service and undertake management of that staff and resource in the absence of the Haematology Operational Manager.

Communication and relationship skills

• Liaise with the Blood Sciences manager and the Clinical Lead Consultant Haematologist in the technical, scientific, clinical and administrative work of the Blood Transfusion service

• Liaise with departmental technical and clinical staff to ensure that all scientific and clinical work is performed to professional standards.

• Liaise with other professionals e.g. the coroner’s office and the police, which may include sensitive information, as required.

• Motivate staff in the performance of their duties to enable them to meet personal and departmental targets.

• To organise, attend and present at local, Directorate, Trust and other meetings as required.

Analytical & Judgemental Skills

• Use experience, knowledge and judgement to interpret complex results, authorise and take appropriate actions in line with local and national policies.

• To advise and provide expert interpretation of results produced by the laboratory. Ensure that technical and clinically relevant comment is given.

• Provide statistical analysis of service workload including test volumes, cost per test, test turnaround times and test requesting frequency/repeat intervals.

• Perform complex option appraisal for service delivery including existing and/or novel pathology investigations, equipment procurement and staff shift patterns.

Planning & Organisational Skills



• Coordinate delivery of laboratory service with other Blood Science and Pathology operational leads.

• Responsible for ensuring a high standard of scientific work is maintained and professional standards are monitored.
• To resolve and manage any situation which may compromise service delivery and ensure that the Blood Science/Pathology Service Managers and clinical lead are informed of any such development.

• Take a leading role strategic planning in service area ensuring that changes in user’s requirements are monitored, planned for, costed and where agreed implemented.

Responsibility for Patient/ Client Care

• Responsible for managing all patient/service user complaints and/or incidents in accordance with Pathology and Trust Policies.

• Lead investigations where service delivery falls below expectations and present reports if required to the Trust Quality Board and Serious Incidents Review Group.

• Responsible for delivery of laboratory service to the Trust.

• To provide expert opinion and scientific/technical advice to clinicians and that relevant clinical staff are informed of clinically significant results which may impact on patient care.

Responsibility for Financial & Physical Resources

• Management of resources within the department such that the expected 24/7 service level is achieved at all times.

• Ensure all wastage of resource including blood products is monitored and embed strategies to reduce wastage.

• To ensure equipment is maintained, repaired and used appropriately in accordance with Pathology and Trust Equipment policies.
