A whole-time post as consultant in paediatric surgery with on-call paediatric surgery and urology commitments, is available now at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust.This is a substantive Consultant post. The Trust is made up of four hospitals - the John Radcliffe Hospital, the Churchill Hospital and the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, all located in Oxford, and the Horton General Hospital in Banbury.Our collaboration with the University of Oxford underpins the quality of the care that is provided to patients, from the delivery of high-quality research, bringing innovation from the laboratory bench to the bedside, to the delivery of high-quality education and training of doctors.The base site for the successful candidate will be The John Radcliffe Hospital (JR), which is Oxfordshire's main accident and emergency site. The JR provides acute medical and surgical services including trauma, intensive care and cardiothoracic services. The post-holder’s duties will be primarily at the Surgical Elective Centre and the West Wing at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, but it is a condition of the appointment that the post-holder will be willing to work in any of the Trust’s locations.The post-holder will contribute to the provision of tertiary level paediatric surgical care and in the acute general and neonatal surgery as part of the acute rota (1:7.5). The post-holder will work closely with other members of the paediatric surgery and urology teams, including clinical nurse specialists, in the delivery of high-level care for children and families from the region and beyond. The post holder will also have clinical support from clinical team members (trainees, trust doctors and foundation doctors) in delivering this care.The post-holder will need to travel to different sites e.g. Horton Hospital, Chipping Norton and Northampton Hospital within our ODN for theatre sessions and clinics. These are existing clinics and lists, as well as others in development. Appropriate travel time will be permitted to reach these sites.

Appropriate travel time will be permitted to reach these sites.Teaching/ResearchOxford University Hospitals NHS Trust is a teaching hospital trust, and the post-holder will be required to participate in programmes for teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations. It is expected that this will be an integral part of everyday clinical activity. The post-holder’s contribution to teaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan review.Clinical GovernanceThe post-holder will participate in all clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies.Personal and Professional DevelopmentThe post-holder will be required to keep himself/herself fully up-to-date with their relevant area of practice and to be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust. Professional or study leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trust, in line with the prevailing Terms and Conditions of Service, to support appropriate study, postgraduate training activities, relevant CME courses and other appropriate personal development needs.ManagementThe post-holder will be required to work within the Trust's management policies and procedures, both statutory and internal, accepting that the resources available to the Trust are finite and that all changes in clinical practice or workload, or developments requiring additional resources must have prior agreement with the Trust. He/she will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of his /her patients’ and the running of his/her clinical service under the direction of the lead clinician and/or directorate lead.
