This post is a Specialty Doctor role within the General Surgery department. The post holder will work as a middle-grade doctor, providing supervised but independent clinical care across emergency and elective services. The role includes inpatient ward care, emergency surgical assessment, theatre activity, outpatient clinics, and participation in the middle-grade on-call rota under consultant supervision. The post holder will escalate clinical concerns appropriately to the on call consultant in line with local policies and patient safety requirements
The timetable will be flexible and will include ward work, theatre activity across the general surgery sub-specialties, outpatient clinics, and participation in the emergency general surgery service, including CEPOD cover as part of the on-call rota.

The General Surgery Department provides the following services:
• General Surgery
• Colorectal
• Upper Gastro-Intestinal
• Breast
• Paediatric Surgery
Emergency and elective work is covered by the department mainly across Abbotsbury and Lulworth wards, however sometimes our patients may be looked after on ICU, Purbeck, Ridgeway or the Children’s ward Kingfisher.
The post will be based on 10 programmed activities (PAs) plus an additional 2 PAs, reflecting on-call commitments and service requirements. The distribution of duties will be agreed through the jobplanning process and reviewed periodically in line with service need and contractual arrangement.
The post holder will participate in the General Surgery middle-grade on-call rota. At the time of appointment, the rota frequency is anticipated to be approximately 1 in 10.
On-call frequency may be subject to reasonable variation depending on staffing levels and service configuration. Any changes will be managed in accordance with the Specialty Doctor contract, Trust policy, and reasonable notice, following discussion and agreement through the job-planning and rota management processes
