Drug and Alcohol Liaison (DALT) Nurse - Band 6

Emergency Department and Acute Medicine Directorate

Do you have experience in caring for patients with substance misuse? Are you looking to develop as a nurse specialist and manage your own patient caseload? Then our Drug and Alcohol Liaison Nurse post may be the next step on your career.

DALT provides timely and responsive drug and alcohol assessment, screening, interventions and management advice with onward referral to and liaison with local community services. We provide support for medical and nursing staff on the effective management of substance withdrawal or stabilization within our the Emergency Department and acute wards.

• Providing a screening and brief intervention service to clients who have been identified as drug dependent or drinking to a level that is assessed as being potentially harmful to their health.
• Assess all clients referred from ED and inpatient wards/clinics and provide expert advice and signposting to community substance misuse services.
• Work closely with local specialist services providing provision for people with drug and alcohol dependency.
• Be able to communicate and negotiate in complex situations and have the ability to make clear autonomous and clinically safe decisions related to patient care.

St George’s, Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals and Health Group cares for a population of four million people in South West London and North East Surrey. After years of collaboration, our two Trusts became a hospitals group in 2021. While remaining as two separate Trusts, being a hospitals group will help us to collaborate more closely on research, and the development, education, and training of our 17,000-strong workforce.
