The post holder will support the Respiratory Nurse Specialist in providing a Respiratory Service that is evidence and research based and provides seamless, quality care. They will gain understanding of the national guidelines for ILD, COPD, Bronchiectasis including diagnosis and evidence based interventions, pharmacological and non – pharmacological.

The role will include assessment of patients with respiratory disease and the development of individualised management plans in conjunction with the medical team. You will gain knowledge regarding the delivery of health promotion of the respiratory patient and their carer and the post holder will have excellent communication skills. The post holder will assist in reducing length of stay and support the early supported community discharge scheme. The post holder will participate with ARI pathway MDT daily. The post holder will enhance their knowledge with having the experience and opportunity of attending and respiratory clinics. In the absence of the respiratory nurse specialist the post holder will conduct nurse led clinic. Good communication will be developed with the community copd teams.

The respiratory service are currently working towards the COPD National audit programme (NRAP) in the form of audit monitoring and this will form part of the role . The post holder will support the patient pathway and become part of a team who value their staff and excel in providing quality patient care.

Under the direction of the Respiratory Nurse Specialist and guidance of the Respiratory Medical team to promote early supported discharge of COPD patients, discharging patients safely and assisting in reducing lengths of stay. Adhering to national guidelines.Will observe the Respiratory nurse led clinic sessions gaining knowledge in disease management and evaluation of care.To participate in MDT with the respiratory team and promote care management to ensure the patients journey is seamless.To provide advice and support to patients undergoing nebuliser assessments and maintain the hospital nebuliser loan service.To participate in referral to the pulmonary rehabilitation programme, T. Liase with inpatient smoking cessation service.To have knowledge of the National Audit programme and complete the audits in a timely manner.To provide advice, assessment and support to patients and ward staff regarding all aspects of oxygen therapy and working in accordance with Walsall Healthcare’s oxygen policy, the local HosAR and the British Thoracic Society oxygen guidelines.To gain knowledge in disease specific conditions.To observe service improvement and participate in sharing new ideas and changes in clinical practice..Accept accountability and responsibility for accurate and legible record keeping in accordance with local policies and NMC guidelines.Participate in training initiatives and induction programmes for pre- and post- registration staff.

Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is an integrated Trust and the only provider of NHS acute care in Walsall, serving a population of 284,300. 1. Under the direction of the Respiratory Nurse Specialist and guidance of the Respiratory Medical team to promote early supported discharge of COPD patients, discharging patients safely and assisting in reducing lengths of stay. Adhering to national guidelines.
2. The post holder will under supervision ensure the needs of all respiratory patients are recognised and met by the assessment, planning,implementation and evaluation of care.
3. Will observe the Respiratory nurse led clinic sessions gaining knowledge in disease management and evaluation of care. In the absence of Respiratory Nurse Specialist, conduct Nurse led clinic.
4. To participate in MDT with the respiratory team and promote care management to ensure the patients journey is seamless.
5. Liaise with multi - disciplinary and multi - agency working in order to achieve the best possible outcome for patient care.
6. To provide advice and support to patients undergoing nebuliser assessments and maintain the hospital nebuliser loan service.
7. To participate in referral to the pulmonary rehabilitation programme, To also promote this service as per the patient discharge bundle.
8. To be able to provide smoking cessation advice and recommend interventions and support. Liase with inpatient smoking cessation service.
9. To have knowledge of the National Audit programme and complete the audits in a timely manner.
10. To provide advice, assessment and support to patients and ward staff regarding all aspects of oxygen therapy and working in accordance with Walsall Healthcare’s oxygen policy, the local HosAR and the British Thoracic Society oxygen guidelines.
11. To gain knowledge in disease specific conditions.
12. To observe service improvement and participate in sharing new ideas and changes in clinical practice.
13. Maintain the Trust’s aims and objectives within the clinical setting.
14. Accept accountability and responsibility for accurate and legible record keeping in accordance with local policies and NMC guidelines.
15. Undertake additional training as required to meet the needs of the patients and register any additional skills acquired as a result of enhanced practice.
16. Participate in training initiatives and induction programmes for pre- and post- registration staff.

17.Assist in developing and delivering a variety of education packages for healthcare professionals, patient forums and carer groups in formal and informal settings.





Management and Leadership



18.Assist in the efficient and effective use of equipment and resources to meet the needs of the service.
1. Ensures effective communication with the multi-disciplinary team.

20.Assist in maintaining a safe level of nursing staff to allow the the respiratory nurse service to provide continuity of care. Assist in taking remedial action and report to senior management when this cannot be achieved.
1. Support colleagues in improving patient care within the service and contributing to strategic development.
2. Deputise for manager as required.
3. Contribute to COPD clinical audits and quality improvement projects.
