**Important notice**
In line with our redeployment policy, we’ll prioritise applications from employees who are under formal notice of redundancy.
We’re looking for someone who loves the outdoor life and wants to help people to enjoy it in their own way. You'll give people a warm welcome, share practical information and offer helpful advice. Whether it’s helping with cycle hire or supporting other active outdoor activities, you’ll play a key part in making sure everyone has an enjoyable and memorable experience.
This is a zero-hour contract, meaning we can’t guarantee a set number of hours each week. While we aim to provide a consistent work pattern, flexibility is needed as schedules may change based on business needs. We’ll try to give as much notice as possible. The role includes weekends and Bank Holidays but does not require evening or split shifts.
What it's like to work here
You'll be based in the cycle hire operation at Wicken Fen, one of the country's most important and species rich wetland nature reserves. You'll be part of a small team, with both staff and volunteers enthused about sharing the site with visitors. Please be aware this is largely an outdoors role, and as you will be helping with the fleet of bikes, whether that's maintenance, repair or simply moving in and out and cleaning.
Cycle routes on the wider reserve, and across the wider fenland, allow access through restored wetland, with opportunities for visitors to grasp the wider landscape as a place for wildlife and people alike.
What you'll be doing
Day to day, you’ll be working with volunteers to make sure our bikes are safe and ready to be hired. You’ll be advising people on outdoor activities, whether which walking routes might best suit them, or promoting our boat trips, and generally making sure that everyone has all the information and guidance they need to enjoy their time outdoors.
Your job is all about creating the best possible experience for everyone. You’ll chat to people to understand their needs and offer relevant advice, while also keeping an eye on safety and maintenance. It’s in your hands to help as many people as possible to enjoy their time in the countryside in whatever way they’d like to.
You can view the full role profile for this role in the document attached. You don't need to have all the knowledge, skills and experience listed in the role profile; this is just to provide a full picture of what’s possible in this role.
Who we're looking for
We’d love to hear from you if you’re:
focused on giving great service to everyone you meet
a team player, but also happy to work on your own initiative
well-organised and adaptable
willing to learn new skills
The package
The National Trust has the motto ‘For everyone, for ever’ at its heart. We’re working hard to create an inclusive culture, where everyone feels they belong. It’s important that our people reflect and represent the diversity of the communities and audiences we serve. We welcome and value difference, so when we say we’re for everyone, we want everyone to be welcome in our teams too.
• Substantial pension scheme of up to 10% basic salary
• Free entry to National Trust places for you, a guest and your children (under 18)
• Rental deposit loan scheme
• Season ticket loan
• EV car lease scheme (for roles that meet the salary criteria)
• Perks at work discounts such as gym memberships, shopping discount codes, cinema discounts
• Holiday allowance up to 32 days relating to length of service, plus holiday purchase scheme, subject to meeting minimum criteria.
• Flexible working whenever possible
• Employee assistance programme
• Free parking at most Trust places
