Crynodeb
The Macmillan Junior Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) provides high-quality, specialist nursing care to patients with melanoma and other skin cancers from diagnosis through treatment, follow-up and, where appropriate, palliative care. Working as an autonomous practitioner and a core member of the multidisciplinary team (MDT), the post holder manages a defined caseload under the supervision of the Band 7 CNS, ensuring patients and their families receive holistic, personalised care and timely access to information, advice and support. Key duties include undertaking comprehensive assessments, holistic needs assessments and care planning; providing nurse-led follow-up and telephone clinics; supporting patients undergoing surgery, systemic therapies and other treatments; and acting as an advocate to promote informed patient choice. The role involves close liaison with surgeons, oncologists, dermatologists, ward and outpatient teams, community services and Macmillan services to ensure seamless, coordinated care across the pathway. The post holder contributes to MDT meetings, maintains accurate clinical documentation and mandatory datasets, supports safe discharge planning, and ensures care is evidence-based and aligned with national and local guidelines. Education is a core component of the role, including teaching and supporting patients, carers, ward nurses and students, and promoting health education related to skin cancer prevention and self-management. The CNS also participates in audit, service evaluation, research activities and clinical governance, and demonstrates leadership by role modelling best practice, supporting service development and upholding Trust values, professional standards and safeguarding responsibilities.
